OK I’ve voted, but direct answers to the questions have nuance:
Overall Rating of this Sim Update 5 beta build?
Pretty good for the base simulator itself, but there is a glaring problem of Settings not saving correctly, and the aircraft fleet is still neglected.
How do you rate the flight model, avionics, and aviation realism in this build?
Also pretty good, but it depends which aircraft. The Inibuilds A330 series would be great if they: obeyed Sim Rate for fuel burn, and, fixed the spontaneous disconnects from Auto Pilot during flight. “Realistic” Turbulence settings seem to use a lot of system resources in general.
How do you rate the quality of the World Scenery?
The Autogen buildings have lost windows (logged). If possible, photogrammetry trees should be replaced by the new auto-generated trees. How scenery looks is highly dependent on TLOD - when scenery is within TLOD range, it looks mostly ok to me, but the transition - when tiles pop in and out - could still be made to appear more gradually rather than squares popping in and out.
How do you rate the quality of the weather depiction, including Live Weather?
Moderate, I still never see lighting or hear thunder, except maybe twice in the whole time I’ve been using MSFS, both times near Signapore, which was great. At altitude, clouds sometimes still look like patterns repeated, which reduces realism, even on “Ultra”.
The lighting at Dawn and Dusk is really good now, but the artificial glow of clouds and haze at night is over done, and either needs a user-adjustable slider, or to be reduced by 50 to 70%. … I believe the “auto brightness” function in MSFS is making night time look bad, it needs some care - it’s so close to being good, I hope it can be improved.
How do you rate the Performance on PC?
Improving. I’m on a high end PC, using triple screens, so I’m relying on performance improvements to just run the simulator smoothly and with high enough visual settings to make it worth the effort and cost.
I would like Asobo to really consider building a more robust “Dynamic” settings system, that would allow setting a Minimum TLOD / OLOD on the ground, and automatically raise TLOD when in flight as the view expands. But this requires some care - when on the ground at a large airport, I want to see the skyline of the nearby city (taller buildings) but raising TLOD is hard, because it wants to draw the thousands of lower level buildings that are in between…
Also, when the system uses the Dynamic setting to lower TLOD and OLOD, it tends to be a bit rough in how it adjusts - that could be smoother and maybe a bit more predictive (eg, approaching runway).
Also, many of the Settings adjustments that are labelled “Quantity” (Parked Aircraft, Aircraft Traffic) are not “Quantity”, but “Distance”. If I have Parked set to Low, I would expect to see a handful of planes scattered at the airport - instead, I see a handful very near me, and as I taxi, new aircraft appear and the ones behind me disappear. Couldn’t it just place a handful around the airport instead of the game of draw distance which ends up feeling unnatural and distracting?
The base DLSS and FSR3 versions installed with the sim are now over a year old, and performance improves significantly by using DLSS Swapper to update to the latest. I’m not sure of the requirements Microsoft and Asobo have to keep the older version, but maybe consider updating what is in the base install package to newer versions?
How do you rate the Stability on PC?
There is a problem settings not being saved or applied reliably, reported in multiple threads. One that affects me is that FSR3 Frame Generation is saved, but not applied to additional windows in a triple screen set up. I have to disable, then re-enable Frame Generation before each flight.
There is a 100% repeatable CTD when closing any Pop Out Window with FSR3 Frame Generation active. (eg, if you pop out the EFB to its own window, then close it, when you have FSR3 Frame Generation active - Instant CTD.)
The Inibuilds Airbuses are particularly prone to losing Auto Pilot and Flight Directors if you pause the flight (eg, Esc to Settings, then Resume), or even when changing camera views from Drone back to Cockpit).
And the sound levels for many default aircraft require attention - many of the them with cockpit annunciations, the volume is too low, while the air pack sounds are too high - there is a lack of alignment of sound volumes, again, especially in the Inibuilds, but not exclusively - annunciations in the Longitude also are inaudible, for example. People have asked for this type of thing to be fixed for years…
The Boeing 787 likewise is having issues with VNAV and capturing ILS… the whole fleet needs love, seriously.
