SimWorks Studios Kodiak 100 one the best aircraft for MSFS 2020

There’s no rocket science really. Just find those bindings in the controller settings and assign each one of them to your controller. Elevator Trim you have to use way more than rudder trim. But you need to use both.

Congratulations on your smooth landings, I guess.

It needs a lot of rudder trim I find, take off especially. It flies beautifully when you get it right (a reasonably rare occurrence in my case haha) also a touch of aileron trim in flight at higher torques can help.

It does indeed lol. But i’m speaking based on the long run during a flight and based on how many times you need to engage each trim. Elevator trim you cannot stop using it, while the rudder you can kinda set and forget after takeoff.

True about the rudder trim, you set it once for take off, and I personally reduce it incrementally as I get towards cruise power. But yes, it requires constant elevator trim if not on autopilot. But that’s par for the course with a lot of GA aircraft so I don’t mind it.

Also a controversial solution to try for quick “easy-mode” results, until one gets the trimming right with trial and error:

Are you ready?..

Turn on AUTO-RUDDER in assistance menu.

LOL

I like the trial and error aspect of getting it right so I’ll pass on that :joy:

Yep, that’s why the option is there. MSFS lets you use it the way YOU want.

My thoughts exactly. I’m trying to transition from the hundreds of hours of CJ4 and also from C152 and Piper Arrow to the Kodiak, but from the first second I found it to be too quirky and difficult to tame. Things that are not really worth mentioning in other aircraft (such as frequent rudder or aileron trimming) are an absolute must in the Kodiak. All of which is a welcome challenge.

It looks as something that could be easily flown by hand (although in reality it takes lots of practice due to the turboprop engine), but it has all the useful G1000 automations that make hand flying unnecessary except in challenging conditions. Landings can be particularly interesting, while I’m getting the hang of it. Usually there’s so much porpoising before it finally settles down that even my 6-year old kid once saw me landing this thing and blurted “Dad, I don’t think that went very well?”

Overall it’s great fun to fly.

I do also find it a lot more nervous on the pitch in cruise since the last update.
Though other then that the FM has improved a LOT. Much more draggy, better longer takeoff roll and she drags her tail a lot more during approach while heavy. Absolutely love it.

Oh and bumping up the pilot model in the external view looks a lot better

I have finally figured it out. Everything works fine, except when I have the VR menu bar active. As soon as that is active I can’t click on the buttons I described previously. As soon as I hide the VR menu bar everything works. Please check it yourself if your time permits.

Yes, I also noticed the lack of feedback on touchdown. Not much rumble, vibration or any other variation in sounds to let you know. It does not seem right in that respect.

It did seem twitchy to me, particularly elevator when landing. Pull or push the stick one micron and the plane would jerk up or down drastically. Stick sensitivity adjustment sorted that for me.

I never noticed that jerkiness, but it probably depends on what type of controller you are using.

I have a Virtual Fly Yoko+, which has quite a long travel on pitch as well as 12bit precision.

Same here, using a Fulcrum with even longer throw then a Yoko (200mm versus 144mm on the Yoko) and no issues.

I suspect people using the more basic 100mm pitch yokes might have more issues.

I’ve never noticed any squirreliness or bouncing around while hand flying. It’s always felt super stable, apart from when it was first released and liked to crash on takeoff. Always felt good to land too - it makes me think I’m more competent at flying that I probably am. There’s a pretty obvious tire noise when they touch down. I fly in VR so maybe that’s a factor.

100% that will be why. I’m also a Fulcrum yoke user and it’s rock solid. If I fly any aircraft with my TM warthog it’s much less of a smooth control response and particularly in pitch. I love this thing it’s simply brilliant. I suspect an extension to the joystick would improve things no end for it.

I really stepped in it by describing how the Kodiak feels compared to other fixed wing bush planes in sim!

:joy:

But I stand by every syllable. It IS squirrelly in the best way. It really needs to be trimmed and managed. It needs to be flown carefully. Take care of her and she will take you anywhere.

It kinda looks like it should feel like a Caravan, but it really has a different power to weight ratio and body to wing proportion that makes it surprisingly, and pleasantly challenging to initially fly. Much like how a sports car is more of a challenge than a station wagon. And I don’t think many would take offense if I said a 750 HP Ferrari is more squirrelly than a PT Cruiser.

I used to have a manual one. You can get them to move if you know how

I had a manual Neon. True, they can move.

Driven performance cars and power boats. Also been flying in flightsims for more years than I care to remember.

One thing higher performance vehicles bring is steering that’s positive and precise…this wasn’t my early experience in the Kodiak.

Also, squirrels have a mind of their own.

…and yes, sticks, yokes and controllers are gonna vary.
