Size, 4k, or OLED. What to sacrifice

Frankly, concerns for burn-in on OLEDs and even old plasma panels has been overdone. I’ve been using nothing but OLED sets with my PS4, PS5 for years and I have yet to see any burn-in. I’m using an LG C3 OLED TV for my PC right now and I haven’t seen any hint of burn-in. One caveat, in my case, is I don’t drive my panels hard when it comes to brightness and contrast. Burn-in prevention on OLED sets has improved immensely. The big annoyance is average brightness level decreasing if an image stays static for awhile. The screen starts to dim and only returns to the original level if a change is detected, such as a mouse or remote control being moved. That is one of the anti-burn-in measures and an annoying one.

3x48" OLED user here Aorus FO48U. Previously i used/tried:

  • 43" 4k center (Cheap TCL TV 250$) and 2k sides 27".
  • 2K center 27" and 24" FullHD
  • Tried 55" Mid-Range TV’s as center.

My personal opinion was 4k is too small for my eyes if screen smaller than 43". Realized this when i was setting up my cockpit/sim rig so (i am 41yo),

  • 2k res is great if the screen size is not big.
  • i waited black friday so i got my monitors cheap.
  • i prefer monitor over tv bcs of gsync, display port etc etc.
  • if i go single screen, i would have ended up those big ultra wide 2k screens. The only thing about the m that i disliked was monitor height was low. (i do truck sim game too)

As for OLED, response is great, colors are great. i hope i will always have money to afford OLED screens
My sim rig is in my basement so i use 50-60 brightness which means zero burn-in risk.

Long story short, first decide what you want, big screen? then it will be 4K, get 48 or 55 OLED.
Smaller size? Get a good 2K ultra wide. Good luck :crossed_fingers:

Yep, that’s very annoying so I turned it off on my OLED using a service remote. I’ve been running my LG OLED48CX for over three years with all the built in protections turned off because they are annoying when you’re using it as a PC monitor.

I do take other precautions such as black background and hidden task bar. I have no burn-in with the screen having over 12,000 hours on time.

48” would be nice. Yesterday I stumbled upon the Samsung S90D. Sadly the 48” is WOLED. The 55” is an QD-OLED but is just a bit above budget and also a little bit too big for my apartment. The new Samsung g9 super ultra wide is cool as well, but also a bit expensive and I don’t know if I like the 1440p height of the screen. Especially because the width is so large.

I’ve thought about doing that; however, I had a hassle with LG over a warranty issue with one of my sets. I don’t trust LG, so I bought an extended warranty through the seller. Going into the service menu and disabling ABL might void any warranty if a service tech was on the ball and noted any changes made in the menu. I have found, generally, that setting contrast and brightness to a reasonable level prevents burn-in. Plasmas were notorious for burn-in. I’m still using an old plasma in the bedroom, attached to a PS4, and have yet to see any burn-in, and that set has to be going on 10 years already.

Thanks, that is an outstanding article. :+1: :fist_right:

Excellent article. Really explains things in an easy to understand way.
Thanks Ron.

This picture shows the very real advantage of 10-bit color (HDR10, VESA HDR600, VESA HDR1000) vs. 8-bit color (SDR, VESA HDR400.)

The image is silly.

The banding of the 8-bit example is ridiculously exaggerated in order to imply that HDR is better. The 10-bit one still looks terrible due to compression.

This is what an 8-bit gradient actually looks like…

It’s an exaggeration, for sure. Certainly you aren’t saying that banding isn’t a problem with 8-bit color that can be vastly improved with 10-bit on a VESA HDR monitor that supports it?

After testing a couple different monitors, I decided on the Alienware AW3423DW. It’s working out well with my work tasks and obviously the games look really good. Time will tell with the burn-in but my impression it is not such a big issue.
