Smaller and colored nameplates for traffic (Updated 2022-03-04)

Then you, too, should make a thread in the wishlist category if there is none yet.
I have no influence on that.

Awesome mod. The small green looks great.

Looks like patch broke them again.

I have the blue coloured one, and they are almost unreadable at night. Itā€™s like the blue text has a dark surround, making it look very blurry. It gets better when you get closer, which shouldnā€™t matter, but certainly seems to.

Iā€™m still downloading, other mods also report that they seem no longer to work for some people. It seems to come down to an issue that MSFS does not load the Community folder after patching. For some one or more restarts solves the issue.

Iā€™ll check what happens with mine and if itā€™s about the mod and not just a restart issue, Iā€™ll create an update.
Maybe try restarting and see if it works now. Would be nice to know if that helped or if the issue is permanent.

Iā€™ll try that out to see if another combination would help. The dark shadow around it should make it better readable in daylight on blue sky background. Hard to find a combo that works in all conditions but also is not as big as the regular ones.

Iā€™ve not revisited that mod, but I might try green next time I do. Blue was fine in most cases before.

Just checked, the Community folder is disregarded by MSFS on first launch (also all liveries etc are missing). But after the restart all mods including this one work again.
So please check on your side, there is no need to update the mod for the patch 1.8.3.0.

Hey all,
since the green version is the most popular so far, I created a v2 version for it, now available on github (check my initial post).

The main changes are:

  • Letter spacing on the name to improve readability
  • Dark background which has rounded corners and spans only as far as needed for the name
  • Details (if provided by the game) only show the altitude (plane type and origin airport are hidden)

It is now also much better readable at day and night but still less bulky than the regular ones.

Iā€™m interested in feedback on this one, especially for higher resolutions than 1080p.
Also there are comments in the included .css file as an orientation if you want to try things out yourself. The original css is basically unreadableā€¦

Have fun!
@simtom2: You can give it a try now if you like

Thanks for the update.

Nice job. I like the new green. It is easier to read. Thank you.

Hey all, the mod is compatible with the 1.9.3 game patch without issues. In case you donā€™t see the mod, please restart your sim since MSFS doesnā€™t load the Community foler on first start after a patch has been loaded.

The green v2 one was working just fine for me last night.

I went back to the previous version without the dark rounded background. I find that less intrusive.

Maybe a toggle option could be implemented.

You mean a toggle for the background? Thatā€™s not so easy especially since many key bindings are reserved in game already.

If you just want an option to toggle the nameplates on and off, hereā€™s a mod that allows this with a fixed key binding:

Note that if you install that mod but want the style of mine, youā€™ll have to prepend an ā€œa_ā€ to the folder of that mod.
So after installing, change the folder name from

[uimod]-mugz-tinyplates

to

a_[uimod]-mugz-tinyplates

Then my mod will override the look of that uimod provided one but keep the toggle on/off via F11 and F12 intact.

Since I do not like mixing look and functionality in one combined mod (making maintenance and dependencies more complex), I donā€™t want to include the toggle option in my mod.

If you have suggestions on new colors/combinations, feel free to request and Iā€™ll see what I can do. For me the v2 with dark background including the toggle option to quickly hide them works the best. Also I like the reduced details to just show the altitude (if provided by the sim) since it declutters the view a lot.

Hereā€™s a screenshot with a quite complex background and many players, other styles would make it hard to read and with the default one youā€™d have the screen full of nameplates:

Actually itā€™s not necessary. You can just remove css from my mod (in layout.json) or replace it with yours css file. Or you can just add JS file to your mod. There is no necessary to install TWO mod. You can combine it. CSS only for style, JS only for key handler

The option just to rename the folder is much easier since you dont have to update the layout.json, delete files etc.

I donā€™t want people to have to modify mods in order to use them, hence the renaming is the easiest way.
If youā€™d choose some regular letter instead of brackets in your name, other mods could adjust the order by choosing appropriate names out of the box. But seems like the [ is loaded after the alphabet, so I canā€™t do that.

I have both mods installed without any issues and provided a howto that works. Letā€™s stick with that.

Hi, any update soon?
Thanks

What kind of update do you expect? A one-liner is certainly not a way to request something.

Well, since update of MSFS the mod ā€œnameplatesā€ seems not to work anymore.
