Watching the Xbox preview from ObsidianAnt he shows the much more detailed Earth on the World Map, it’s essentially Bing Earth but not in as much detail and without the ability to zoom right into Street level…but it’s a start!
Personally this will help aid my VFR planning, I like scenery to look at, mountainous regions, specific geological areas of interest and the like. Before/currently I had to use Google Earth or the maps in LNM to find an area of interest but not anymore it seems come Tuesday.
Of course this could just be the start, there’s plenty of scope to improve upon the Bing Earth in game; more details, POIs, zoom levels, angles perhaps so you can view from certain elevations etc etc. Nice.
I agree, for me it’s a very good improvement as I can’t stand this current lack of detail when zooming. I don’t care to go as far as street level, what I saw in the video is far enough for a fly sim perspective. Angles, so a 3D display, could be very cool indeed!
It’s definitely a huge improvement. I haven’t seen the video yet but did watch the first stream which they showed the new features and it seemed to be what I had hoped and expected would be the case. I mean just having places names is a huge help so can just look at the map rather than connect to a flight tracker just to find my way. Basically quality of life updates
I hope they take it to street level in a future update. Then I can make my local McDonalds a destination in the flight plan, land the helicopter in the drive-thru and start a riot.
Oh, that’s cool. This is one of the first deficiencies I noticed when launching the sim on release day. I thought something was wrong when I lost detail as I zoomed in on the map.
That would be really cool and would really bring out the STOL aircraft’s capabilities. Always feels odd taking off and having to spend 30 seconds in air before clear airport lol!
I did manage to land and then take off the Zlin Shock Ultra on the helipad of that Dubai hotel (Albiet not on the first attempt! though easy enough to build up speed and try again if it fell off!).
Not somethign most woudl attempt to do in real life!
Pity the Nvidia screenshot decided to take a screenshot of my ATC window rather than the main game window will have to do it again soon.
I thought this was just to select a location rather than actually flying in that level of scenery. Must have been wrong - we’ll see in a couple of days time.
Flying around already uses Bing maps it has been MSFS’s showcase trick from release! Havignt he world map with the same detail will be VERY usefull (currently have to use an external mapping and getting coordinates, which is a REAL drag.) At least this way i can see valleys and hills and plan the route better.
Now if they could only do something with that so called VFR map. I know there are others to download, but not keen on needing to run server apps, and even openstreetmap, isnt really a vfr aeronautical map.
I agree. I found the map in FSX much more useful. It showed all the relevant frequencies, airspace - and if you clicked on a boundary - what the levels were, and even the ILS feathers.
Cor yeah a way to inject Air Zones, Air Space, even holding patterns and the like. Anything like that would be extremely cool if not by Asobo themselves but a third party to help or something…as above the possibilities are endless.
Yeah I am hoping that given the VFR map is essentially a simplified version of menu map then we may see names of places and hopefully slightly more details like roads on the VFR map but I’m not sure if is going to happen
