I’m having mostly excellent Free Flights in FS2024. The scenery is so much better than in FS2020 that I’m willing to be patient with the new sim.
I feel for those of you having all those problems I’m just not seeing with my system.

Last night I made my first flight ever in the Cessna Longitude, IFR with BATC, from KORD to KMSP, ILS 30L landing. Everything went quite well, including a go around and a holding pattern to land after other traffic. There were zero issues. It was a great flight.
I, too, feel bad that so many have decided to give up on MSFS2024. It seems that issues with aircraft (and scenery?) are possibly being fixed through streaming unannounced and the four patches have fixed big issues in the core of the sim.
My experience since the last patch has been very good, with only a few stutters now and then. No CTDs. This is for Free Flight and Challenges.
This is with a 5600x, rx 6650xt, 32gb, Samsung 2tb 990 Pro on medium to high settings using either TAA or FSR2 Quality with AFMF enabled. Startup is roughly 3.5 minutes. It’s not likely I’ll return to 2020 for more than a short flight or two, but it’s still installed “just in case.”
It has been 2:1 for me, flight hours wise, since 24 launched:
I fly twice as many hours in 2020 than in 24. All free flight…
Here is what I fly in 2020:
737, 77W, 777F (PMDG)
35A & C414AW (Flightsimware)
B60 Dukes, King Air (Blacksquare)
C310R (Blackbird)
Here is what I mostly fly in 24:
787-10 (default/Asobo)
G2 VisionJet (FFX)
C404 (default/Carenado)
C337H (Carenado)
In 24 it’s all VFR in VMC except for the Dreamliner (and maybe the FFX VJ), unlike in 2020 where I am comfortable flying most models IFR in IMC, due to sim system stability. Cheers!
My default sim is currently 2020, as I cannot get 2024 to run without consistent a nd random CTDs.
I’ve posted in many treads about CTDs everytime I start 2024 within about 10-15 minutes after launch, so wont go into detail here. That being said, for me 2020 is 99% stable in VR, so it’s my default.
2020 is where its at currently. Perhaps things will change post 2024-SU1, but as of today, it’s 2020…. As stated VR is 99% stable, VatSim works flawlessly, all my purchased addons work, why would I change??? $300 wasted on aviators edition 2024? Yup, that’s how I feel. I also feel that 2024 will get better in time. However, I am not certain if I will continue with MS/Asobo when a competing sim comes along in the next couple years….
I had every intention of going over to 2024, but as 2020 still isn’t right in many areas, I thought I’d hold fire to see how it was received.
Boy, am I glad that I did!
It seems that it could be another year before the issues finally get sorted!
I’ll keep an eye on the forums, but for now I’ll carry on enjoying relatively trouble free flights in 2020. I do this to relax, not to have a stressful time.
Currently just over 2700 hours on 2020.
Eventually they’ll get away from the ‘I’m on holiday so throttle down the textures to keep it stable for a weeks and they’ll still play it’ version. I have a recent 2020 pic as my background and it took me a while to convince the wife it’s not real. 7500’ in the Comanche and the small airstrip below has perfectly legible runway numbers on a tiny portion of the 55" image and Orbx HD trees 15 miles out in every direction, at 80+FPS.
I haven’t purchased 2024. 2020 is good enough for my needs.
When I want to use flight sim is nice that 2020 just works without issue, I can fly for an hour then close it and do something else.
I had high hopes for 2024 but figured it was safer to wait and see, and that was proven right. I might get it when it has been running for a year or so.
2024 is the new default warts and all. I actually have found plenty to do in the new sim that isn’t affected by bugs so I don’t have many complaints. I have settings that give good performance and I am finding familiar planes fly better now. But I prefer low and slow and off-airport flying so the sim works well in those areas.
Plus, I got the premium deluxe edition this time so I have a lot more new planes to try. The main thing is that I can keep making planes in the sim which really makes it a cheap toolbox to create whatever you want. It’s harder in some ways but also unlocks new capabilities. If you look past the premature condition, it really is a big step up.
FS2020.
All of the RAF Stations in central England now have ATC.
Most of them are ‘Flight Following’ areas. Flight Following happens in the RAF, but not in civil.
IFR ATC is still not working to convention. Wrong Altitudes.
For me on xbox, buying pmdg products (finnaly sale😅) rose 2020 to next level, where I can comfortably wait months for 2024 to became worthy ptoduct. Then I will decide what next.
No rush of course, and I am not making a recommendation. That said, when you do jump into 24, try the default 787 if you like PMDG in 2020. While of course not up to PMDG level, it is actually a good ride in 24 and a very nice compliment to PMDG products for those days when I just want to fly something different, but familiar Boeing. There is very little out here on the threads because, perhaps, there are few Dreamliner defects and any there are are minor.
Haven’t touched MSFS2020 for quite a while now.
Actually, after this morning’s flight in the 737-800, it has been…
60% in 2020 (41 hrs) vs.
40% in 2024 (27 hrs) since it launched.
Now that we can bring some of our add on scenery into 24, the point of difference for me will be which aircraft I can only fly in 2020 vs the aircraft I am willing to fly in 24. Headed towards a 50-50 split over time? I only free flight so 24 has some possibilities for my purposes and enjoyment.
Tried 24 again today.
Had tried to send flight path to avionics in the CJ, Nav mode not working, live weather over Dallas was heavy snow (Wrong, they’re having unseasonably warm weather and thunderstorms) and vectors took me to somewhere that wasn’t an airport at all. I had the male ATC telling me to go up to FL200 on approach and acknowledging the change of airport that I didn’t request, the female meanwhile was talking over the male ATC telling me to descend to 3,000ft.
Then I have the problems with the Velocity One, despite binding both engines’ throttle to the same selector, engine two consistently lost power, while engine one would increase but wouldn’t decrease. Most of the axis appear to be inverted (which I thought I’d rectified in Assistance Options).
So MSFS 2024 + Velocity One firmware = Absolute pile of pony.
I’m going back to MSFS 2020 where I was at least able to successfully reverse the mess of Turtle Beach’s latest firmware effort, then get back to flying some of the craft I’ve bought and enjoyed flying over the last 3 years.
My brother-in-law was singing FS 24’s praises at dinner last night but he’s got a £3k PC and spent all week setting up his very expensive equipment. I can see the potential but currently it’s a waste of the tiny amount of spare money I had. My own fault I guess, should have waited until I got a new job and could afford to waste £130 on software that’s not yet fit for purpose.
Me? I have both 2020 and 2024 installed but enjoy 2024 the most.
Only fly 2024, often the weekly challenges. Sometimes with my friend from austria free-flight.
I fly FS2020.
I get Flight Following and as long as I stay in their area, I can practice my aerobatics.
South of RAF Cosford, Shropshire. A Class Airspace FL145 - FL600.
100% 2020, nothing of interest in 2024 yet
2024 is my default simulator now. Out with the old in with the new. Progression as I see it. 2024 runs exceptionally well on my system. More ram for this ram hungry sim! This is an expensive hobby if you want all the bells and whistles!
