Hello,
I have encountered a bizarre issue today (and only today) that is affecting every craft I have. I am getting very low GPU utilization in Sim UNLESS I have AI piloting on. I’ve tried multiple aircraft, airports, live weather on and off, doesn’t seem to make a difference. If I am flying normally I’ll get severe stuttering and lag and only about 30 - 35% GPU utilization. As soon as I enable AI piloting that jumps to 90 - 95% GPU utilization and everything is buttery smooth.
Has anyone else encountered an issue like this?
Bizarre is a great word to describe that problem!
I can’t even imagine what would cause that correlation. I’m very curious to see if there are some theories on what’s going on with that!
Maybe (and this is a HUMONGOUS maybe) if you’re running an Nvidia GPU, their PhysX code may be running on the GPU instead of the CPU???
I know that’s a huge stretch, but it’s the only logical connection that I can think of. And even then, I’m not really sure what PhysX is used for, if anything, in the SIM.
I’ve always thought about flight model, ground physics, etc. so I’m thinking this is a real shot in the dark.
Just a thought…
Oh my God. I found out what my issue was and it’s 100% me because I’m an idiot. Give me a moment to grab a beer and I’ll explain what was going on and hopefully my tale will be a cautionary one for others.

Okay, after pulling my HOTAS input mappings up I noticed that my Toggle Cabin Lights switch was triggering about 100 times per second. Evidently it had been jarred in such a way that it was triggering constantly even though it appeared to be in the right position. Because I had only been flying in daylit areas I didn’t notice the lights flickering but it was registering so many interrupts my manipulators in sim would jump from 4.2ms on average to 97+ ms. That behavior stopped with AI piloting of course because though the AI is content to lawn dart your plane into a mountain, it won’t play with the lights like it’s at a rave.
TL;DR - Make sure you are not constantly triggering lights or other actions inadvertently because that will cause you to have a lot of performance issues. AI pilot stopped the behavior which is why things when back to normal.
