Some good news that could end up being interesting

If it has already been discussed, which is highly probable, then disregard.

Meta, Microsoft, Amazon joint maps venture shares first open dataset - UPI.com

Those companies together could end up producing something of much higher quality than Bing Maps. Maybe the sim could use it then? Just speculating.

Just depends on what they’re allowed to have access to and if it fits there needs. But mostly it’s about $$$. I don’t see why when MSFS first came out they couldn’t have used Google for their imagery. Instead they used Bing. My guess would be that Google wanted what was out of their budget.

You really fail to understand why Microsoft used their own mapping service over their rivals? That would’ve been a great look, so confident in their own product that they used a rivals instead, lol.

and of course, the business “complicatons” and part ownership constraints and royalties and… and … the list woudl never end… and it would have , eventually, end up in court…smile

You know why bing is called bing right? “Because It’s Not Google” wink wink

It boggles my mind when Google comes up. I can just see it. MS/Asobo to Google. “We know we are competitors, and we know we buy our sat images from the same handful of providers, but pretty pretty please can we use your images ? We will buy them and use in our game?. We know there are licensing agreements and a host of other legal requirements, but can we use your data ? We will come up with something for our shareholders that we thought it was a good idea that some very very small users on our forums that don’t know we own Bing and we should get Google images. We are begging you”

For the same reason Google Earth doesn’t use Bing scenery for its flight simulator.
