Spikey Stutters

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue: Spikey stutters in VR

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)? With normal settings it occurs constantly.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Select any Graphics preset

  2. Launch to VR

  3. Use of FPS counter optional as the stutters are clearly visible.

YOUR SETTINGS

I noticed those spikey stutters many folks are seeing, so I dug into it a bit. If you switch to external view and look down on your aircraft in 2D, you can see a patch of high quality terrain LOD underneath your aircraft. Outside of that patch is lower quality LOD, and you can watch square patches of higher LOD pop in as you fly along.

However, in the cockpit, this patch of high quality LOD is beneath you (at 10000 feet) where you can’t see it. So, you are paying for high quality terrain LOD, but you can’t see it.

Drag your LOD sliders down to 10, and the spikey stutters go away. I suspect they are caused by the popins of the higher quality terrain LOD beneath your aircraft. I know the terrain gets all soft and fuzzy when you do this, but that’s how it’s working now.

Low terrain LOD also allows use of Ultra Texture resolution. So you get a beautiful plane and cockpit view, but you sacrifice detail in the ground. I think this has been how it’s working for a very long time now, but the Beta is making the popins more visible as stutters.

I’m running my Valve Index at 4k per eye with DLSS balanced in these screenshots.

MEDIA

A bit more testing, you don’t have to go down to 10 on the LOD sliders. 50 works well too, and since the default Medium preset keeps resetting for VR, I am just going to test the default settings with my choice of AA.

This is DLSS 4.5 Quality, FidelityFX zero, 40 max fps, and Nividia Reflex On. Looking good.

Moved out from Sim Update 5 Beta | MSFS 2024 since not beta related and not a bug.
