I agree with both posts above - it depends on what you want from the sim, at any point in time.
From a pure training perspective, 100% reliable aircraft in a controlled simulator are valuable. But even practising failures - when they are planned failures - cannot be quite the same as practising an unplanned failure that catches you unawares. And that’s the attraction for me. Even if I never experience one, the idea that I could keeps me on my toes more than if it were not possible.
I wouldn’t truly enjoy an adventure game where my character is invincible, or a racing game where you can’t spin out or damage your car. Similarly, I could never truly get full enjoyment out of a flight simulator with a perfectly reliable aircraft. It has been one thing missing from pretty much all simulators out-of-the-box for my last 30 years of simming.
Third party developers have solved that. If Asobo can add their own option for it in the base sim, all the better for those that want it, and at that point the walkaround finally serves a purpose instead of being added ‘fluff’ in Free Flight ![]()
