Start flight without walkaround (MSFS2024)

Great idea. In the essence of simplicity - and for those who don’t have a separate utility, this is a basic sim functionality - newly added at that - which in addition to the option you’ve suggested, should also be available in the menu for all simmers.

You don’t start on the ramp when flying airliners.

It’s so interesting to see all of the opinions posted and different expectations.

As a high-hours pilot, you “just want to fly”. I’m just curious, where does that process start for you? Do you still enjoy a cold & dark startup, following checklists, or after a lifetime of handling them for real, do you prefer to jump in on the runway with with engines running and simply go fly?

I ask only because everyone wants different things from the sim. I’ve had a similar conversation before where a former pilot had suffered a lifetime of maintenance headaches & costs with a real aircraft and couldnt imagine anything worse than dealing with wear & tear or random failures in a simulator. On the other hand, many people love the persistence and MTBF-based realism of systems to bring meaning to looking after their aircraft.

It’s so hard to predict what people want. I’d assume most real-life pilots want a high degree of realism, but then ‘realism’ for one doesn’t match ‘realism’ for another.

The only solution is to provide the users with options to tailor their experience. Let’s hope we get that soon :slightly_smiling_face:

Just saw a new payware panel here.

Don’t think it will work in career mode as 3rd parties panels are not allowed.

Availability for all planes and their variables has to be check too.

Description

Lets you disable chocks and covers automatically

Only enable the covers and chock you want.

Remember the state of the aircraft on the previous flight:

If you put the chocks or covers before ending the flight, they will be there when you launch the next flight.

You can also use the dev menu to remove them, not a real time saving option but it’s there. And i’m not sure you loose flight time on profile that way. If you have acces to send variables (SPAD.next, AAO etc.) you can also make them all remove with a button press.

Anyway, the option is already in the sim, so making it a setting aint to difficult for Asobo.

Why on earth does Asobo always assume that all simmers want the same thing?

We had a cold start in FS2020, and most people were happy with that. Some wanted to go further, and do the walk-around first, so Asobo assumed everybody wanted it, and did not include an option to go straight to the cockpit, as in FS2020. Not very sensible.

Similarly, why are both the taxi ribbon and the navigation boxes tied to the same option? The taxi ribbon is (unfortunately) necessary, given the poor state of taxiway labelling. The navigation boxes are an immersion killer, and only necessary for beginners. But someone at Asobo decided you can’t have one without the other. Again, not very sensible.

And why did they not include a cancel button in the settings screen?

etc.

(For the sake of my blood pressure, I’d better stop there.)

I’m a big fan of realism, but it’s little quirks like these keeping me away from ‘24 at the moment. Thanks for the post.

I am very surprised why a huge mistake was made: the start of the mission without the parking brake!!! And during the cutscene, your plane leaves into a cliff or a tree.

Note that the B events are different for different aircraft. Only a few use the generic ‘B:UNKNOWN_’ events. So you have to find the right events for each aircraft (for example the Longitude events all start with ‘B:LNG_EXT_’). I’ve got a button bound to remove chocks and covers in Spad but every time I fly a new aircraft I have to discover the right events (there doesn’t seem to be a universal naming convention) and re-do that binding. It’s tedious to say the least.

There might be an easier way to do it, but if there is I haven’t found it yet.

I like to start on a platform without a walk-aroound

Me too, cold/dark cockpit. Doesn’t impact realism IMO. Just like we don’t need to stop by the coffee pot before either. Walk around is too much to require, should be optional.

Yes, but in A2A it is optional, you can always start the flight with a completely new plane, if you choose so.

Voted.

I generally do not carry out the walk round checks in free flight with the exception of removing engine/pitot covers. The rest I ignore and so far had no issues starting the plane up and flying.

But yes I’d like to see an option to remove the requirement for a walk round in free flight.

Thanks to whomever called out binding “Take control of character” (on this or any other thread for 24)! I did this and now I can start a flight cold and dark in a compatible but non-24 feature rich aircraft. Have tested this with 3 so far:

T207 Stationair-II
V35B Bonanza
MU-2

I think these are all Famous Flyers or Local Legends that I have in 2020, so that is what I am looking for now, in addition to the 3rd party add-on aircraft that are 24 compatible.

One small step for me; one giant leap for 2024! LOL

Be very careful, while this does work the couple of times I tried it, it did NOT remove the chocks, engine covers or pitot cover and my engine died a few seconds after getting in…

I’d totally want to see an option to turn this off - but also to see improvements on how the stuff works.

  • I fly in VR and want to do the walkaround in VR as well, but there’s 1. no way to turn the character around with the controllers and 2. no way to remap the controllers (currently controller bindings button in the VR options does nothing and “Touch Pointer” has no bindings that I could remove and I also can’t map things to it using Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop)

  • When I first unchocked my Savage Cub, it apparently was too windy and it was blown away, did a 30° right turn and rolled for like 30m or so. The thing doesn’t have parking brakes afaik, but just by scrolling down here I had a quick glance at a comment saying the parking brake wasn’t applied at the beginning. But even without, there’s people around that may hold the thing down in place until you’re going as long as it’s something light enough for them to do that (just look some WW1 bird footake from Mikael Carlson to see what I mean). Wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t animated for the time being.

  • Also, I can’t re-chock my plane, or did I miss something? Would want to to it the other way round at the end as well, and be able to make sure the thing stays in place after landing. Make the Co-Pilot - if present - hold the thing down when you leave the thing.

Ah ha. I found it. I’ve got a way around the plugs-in-all-the-time deal.

It involves modding every single plane in the sim (where you don’t want plugs) and that’s a bit of a pain but it can be done. For those in my discord I plan on making it one big drop-in mod but it’ll be a minute as I have to do it all

For those wondering, in each aircraft folder for the Virtual File System, there’s a folder called common\flt where it stores all of the flt files we’re familiar with from years past. There are second (or even third) copies of the apron.flt named things like apronwithoutcovers.flt that are unused. My plan is to overwrite all of the apron.flt with a new copy that has the plugs, etc removed. These are basic entries in the flt files.

So far I’ve tested this with precisely one airplane and it works great.

It’s far from ideal and hopefully Asobo will give us the option from the world map but for now it’ll work

yes, sometimes you want to jump in an fly and that should be an option user controls … sometimes I’m shooting some flight over and over and just need to get on with it , other times I’m short of time … why argue over this … just give the user options

Another situation I’ve never understood:
Why do we need the walk-around if the aircraft’s state isn’t saved from one flight to the next? After the flight, we can’t even put the chocks back on or cover the engine. Every time we start a flight, everything is always 100% perfect.

It’s urgent to have an option to start the flight inside the aircraft with everything turned off, just like in MSFS2020.

At the moment, even the aircraft variant and livery from the previous flight aren’t saved, so we can’t start a new flight with the same options we previously selected.

Do you fly with aircraft damage on or off?
