Starting without removing engine covers kills the engine

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

I came across the Youtube video below of someone trying to start and fly with the engine covers still in place. Apparently it prevents the engine from starting, or kills the engine right after start-up.

This is another arcadedy implementation, in real life those engine covers have no effect on the engine itself (at least initially), air going to the fuel control unit is not coming from the inlets blocked by those bungs.

The engine would start and run normally, but will have no cooling, CHT will go up, the engine will run rough due to detonation and pre-ignition until eventually something breaks.

If applicable, which aircraft is experiencing this issue:

Makes sense to me! Voted.

Would the current behavior make sense if they made the engine cover also include a cover over the air intake?

It doesn have a cover there, at least not visually.

Yeah just wondering if they were to add it rather than change the engine behavior.

I don’t think a cover exists for that, at least not on the 172. There is a big air filter in front so there isn’t much need. Most aircraft have automatic alternate air so even with a cover the engine will keep running.

Also the C172 has automatic alternate air door, it will take air out of the engine bay, even with the inlet bungs in place the engine is not going to run out of air. So the current implementation is just flawed.

I see, thanks!

I wouldn’t call it bug tbh.

How about a reminder to take the covers off.

It is not accurate though, call it what you want, a flawed implementation? Not saying this should be priority to fix, but I do report everything that is not correct maybe they will fix it one day…
