Steam version or Microsoft store?

In the past, there used to be a lot of “Filename too long” issues with the default install location as well.

But, I imagine, at some point, Windows 12 or 13 or something, they’ll lock things down and force a location on us…

So is better I buy the Xbox version (dont have a xbox) and I can use it on PC and Cloud?`

But when I buy the pc version I cant play it on xbox and cloud?

Hello @CONVEEN,

If you purchase Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 from either the Xbox or Windows Store, your license is valid for both platforms, PC and Xbox (but you can only play on one device at a time).

To play using Xbox Cloud Gaming, you need a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

If you purchase via Steam, then your license is only valid on PC and you can’t also use it on Xbox.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

Ahh thank you. Very bad is only that the avation version cost in Germany 30 Euro more then the US.

Still not sure why someone would buy it from Steam.

not sure about 2024, but msfs files were encrypted if purchased through the ms store. good luck with modding/tweaking/troubleshooting with that. thats a non negotiable.

all my games are on steam already. don’t wanna deal with yet another launcher.

…and in my experience game management (upgrade/install process) has been much better on steam so i’m sticking with them.

edit:also will never bother with flight sims on a console, so that’s a non issue.

recently went through the same process. moved my entire community folder (the bulk of the install) to its own drive and addonlinker made it easy peasy. been using it since early days - a must have imho, especially useful at times when you need to figure out which addon is causing issues etc.

as others said the XBOX/PC version is the same. You can switch between PC and Xbox. Marketplace items remain. Login your PC xbox app with same microsoft account, click download of game.

IT better to stay with the MS version.

PS dispite what another said you can mod, put in manual liveries, planes and install 3rd party planes and items on the MS Xbox app version,

Steam Version did make a lot less problems in the past years with MSFS 2020. So if you dont intend to use the MSFS 2024 on an XBOX I would always prefer Steam Version over Store/DVD.

I run with the Steam version and am will be going with Steam for 2024 as well.

What I’m basing it on is I’ve moved the FS2020 directories a couple of times and it was trivial to get everything reconnected. Meanwhile, the guys I was flying with on the Microsoft store version had big headaches whenever they had to do stuff like that to the point they would remove and reinstall instead of just moving directories. It would take them down for days getting things sorted and reinstalled.

I don’t know skill levels and wasn’t with them but they were always having trouble of some kind.

Things could be different with 2024 though. Maybe the platforms will be more similar this time through. But I’ll still be going with Steam.

Went with Steam for 2020 and will go with Steam for 2024.

I cannot create a Steam account (“error, try later”). I did not find a Steam helpdesk. So my choice is easy : I stay with MS store.

You know, I tried the addon linker, but I just didn’t have the patience to figure out how to use it. Of course, at the time I had plenty of disk space on my NVMe, so, maybe it’s time.

Given I’m on an 11700k with only 8 cores and MSFS will be using ALL the cores, I’m contemplating uprevving to a 14900K with 24 cores I think it has and double the threads for 2024, at which point I’ll add a 2TB NVMe I think. So now trying to decide if I should stay with my 64GB of DDR4-3600, or upgrade the memory to DDR5, too. I already have a RTX4090. Upgrading the mem looks like it’ll nearly double the cost to a >$1K.

I had zero problems in 4 years except a short lived corruption of my Xbox account after a BSD a long time ago. Since MS upgraded the updating process a year or two ago, I’ve seen nearly zero people complain about anything but download speed, which also seems a lot better now.

I think the updating comparison is now a dead horse.

I’d recommend sticking with the Microsoft store or Steam version of MSFS, if someone already purchased add-ons from the in-game Marketplace.

MS store ver allows to play on both PC and Xbox without needing to purchase the game twice. This cross-platform flexibility is a great benefit if you plan to switch between devices.

FYI, there was a time when Steam users didn’t have access to certain beta versions of MSFS. We don’t know what the future will bring …

When it comes to the performance and functionality of MSFS purchased through the Microsoft Store or Steam, issues encountered are comparable.

Updating was only one of the problems. Store Version still depends on MS Gaming Services and most likely so will the 2024 version.
Till today people sometimes get the Insert DVD 1 Error, even if they own the store version. This doent happen with Steam. Also the default install location is kind of protected and has a very long pathname already. Both can lead to problems for an average windows user.
Nothing of it would be a deal breaker and the differences aren´t that big like in the beginning, but it still is there.

I have a lot of experience with giving daily user to user support with a small team of volunteers on my discord (6k+ members) for years now, so this is not only based on my experience with my own version (steam).

I appreciate your reply but I want to know if running MSFS in a PC with an Xbox account, will I be able to add aircraft that are available for PC only? Thank you.

Anyone know when it will be available to pre-order on Steam?

On the 26th.

Much appreciated!
