I was hoping the badly matched textures and especially the ones that show snow in the middle of summer on flat land (example near Zeltweg airport) would be fixed.
The worst affected areas are around Klagenfurt. Mostly west, but also right north of the airfield.
Klagenfurt airport is also nothing to write home about. Many hangars missing, no ground equipment (stairs, catering truck , baggage). Even freeware is much better.
Switzerland is so much better. When I look on Bing Maps I can see why. No idea why Bing is so bad for south/western parts of Austria in 2021. I was hoping MS would be able to source better images for the badly affected areas. It’s not fun to see swathes of snow on fields in the middle of summer and aerial mismatches (long parallel lines going across for many miles).
Love MSFS but this really lets it down.
The images below are from Bing, but this is roughly what you also see in MSFS after WU 6.
Yeah, it’s the biggest letdown for me with WU6.
As you said, the Klagenfurt region is horrible as the seasons change practically every couple of NM. The alps themselves are also pretty bad. It’s better north of the alps from what I saw so far.
Also there’s a very distinct green hue across all the imagery. I guess this stems from some color correction that was applied to get some consistencty between different photographs. It’s noticeable on streets as well, but especially the rock formations in the alps have this weird greenish tint like they are covered by algae or something.
I’m afraid there’s not a lot that can be done until the bing data improves for this region. The competition definitely has better data for this area, so sources for better imagery must exist.
Let’s hope that regions that were already covered in previous world updates can at least get better aerial imagery at some point once bing gets new data.
The MSFS Team bought photogrammetry data for cities not covered by Bing. I think they should do the same for badly covered aerial areas on Bing like the Klagenfurt, Zeltweg and Alps area in Austria. It’s such an area of beauty, totally let down by these aerial pictures. We all know that in a modern country like Austria, these images do exist.
I’ve spent the past few days flying around the alps of Switzerland and Austria. Switzerland seems to be a complete triumph - very precise and detailed DEM - the high pass roads such as Grimsel and St Gotthard now have fairly realistic level roadbeds and switchbacks rather that looking like something taped to the side of the slopes. The photo imagery is very clear and high resolution, with realistic colors (mainly), and few noticeable tile boundaries - probably the best large terrain area in MSFS. You can even see a decent representation of the nearly vertical north face of the Eiger. Austria is a different matter. The DEM is good, but a few notches below Switzerland. It seems that much of the terrain imagery west of Salzburg has been updated and some of it looks as good as Switzerland. The photo imagery to the east including a large part of the Salzkammergut and the mountains to the south has not been updated at all. This was a real disappointment since the botched areas are some of the most well-known and beautiful regions in Europe. Much of the area is covered in snow or is autogenerated fill-in because of cloud cover on the original photos. I realize that it might be difficult to acquire photography of the highest quality and resolution for every area, but it would be better for the sim if MS/ASOBO temporarily used a significantly lower photo resolution with the correct summer season and colors that matched the good neighboring areas.
I completely agree. There’s no point in super high-res imagery when it’s partially winter or cloud-coverage photos. The lower resolution would at least work for IFR en-route flights.
BhanTugh.
I know it’s very very annoying bad texutres, I’m myself very pointy about this issue. I want nice textures especially after a WU. After reading your post, I can suggest you something I do everytime I’m flying in mountain’s ranges especially Alps. You have certainly remarked the summer textures on any mountains in the world are really looking bad especially snow on them. If you want very nice mountains, don’t use LIVE WEATHER and add manually 5cm of snow. You will get the best looking mountains ever and you snow textures you are talking about disappear. Try it. Look all bad textures I found to date. And if you want to see what looks like the mountains with manual snow added, look at my video. FS 2020 Sphinx Observatory Swiss Alps - YouTube
