So I was looking in my main MSFS directory (in the hidden AppData folder) and saw Carenado had recently added a very strange folder in the main root directory called $PC$.
Yes, that’s the word “PC” with two dollar signs on each end. What in the world…? It then goes on to drill down many more layers of folders, with the final folder being entirely empty.
Has this happened to anyone else? It’s a VERY strange location for any third party data and I’m inclined to delete it. But wanted to check any other Carenado customers if they’ve had this strange incident after the most recent update? Cheers.
Full path: C:\Users[me]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\ $PC$\MSFS\OFFICIAL\STEAM\CARENADO-AIRCRAFT-PA34-SENECAV\SIMOBJECTS\AIRPLANES\CARENADO_PA34_SENECA_V\EFFECTS\TEXTURE
strange! i wonder if this is a mistake from the recent update. i’m not computer expert but I thought having $ dollar signs meant folders were temporary or special or something. so maybe they forgot to clean up? or maybe it really is necessary now. just a really strange spot for it
Well it’s really strange. I flew the seneca and no folder was created for it. So I then deleted the M20R folder and restarted the sim. I flew both aircrafft after deleting the folder, I flew the seneca first, and now there’s a seneca folder but not a M20R folder. So even though I have 2 aircraft it’s only making 1 folder, whichever one I flew first. But it’s still an empty folder with all of the sub-folders you mentioned down to the texture folder. So I’m stumped. I’m not sure what’s happening here.
can you please elaborate? I do indeed use steam, but this is the first time i’m seeing a $$ folder in the main MSFS directory and it’s only for a single carenado plane.
But! I’m on my laptop right now and while I have Carenado aircraft, I’ve not flown them on my laptop. My PC, yes. So I wonder if it would create that if I did?
I have noticed this $PC$ folder gets populated when add ons are added to MSFS that use MDL files as opposed to gITF. It appears to be a cache folder of sorts that will get rebuilt as required, even if deleted.
I am wondering if in the latest update to the Carendo planes they used a MDLX texture file instead of the new native GITF, which may explain the creation of this folder?
I also think that this may the file that is causing the creation of this folder for me:
C:\msfs\Official\OneStore\carenado-aircraft-m20r-ovation\SimObjects\Airplanes\Carenado_M20R_Ovation\effects\texture\CARfx_0.png
In addition to the $PC$ folder entry I am also getting a new folder in Official/OneStore, a _ CVT_ folder:
