After updating to 1.12.13.0 I started the sim today again, and all of sudden it notified me that my packages were not updated enough and that it would bring me back to the start screen…
However, instead of doing that it started showing the Press Any Key to Start movie, every time I do just that, it thinks for a while, and then puts me back in the movie…

I’ve seen this issue in off-line mode. You might try signing out of your microsoft account in the x-box app, signing back in and then re-launching the simulator.
Have you lost internet connection? I got this and re-connected internet; now gone
I was downloading something in the background at full internet speed, so might have limited it so much that the game thought I had no internet available. After a restart of the game (and the download was also done), it worked just fine again.
