For me the download rate didn’t seem to be a problem. I made the following changes and the difference is astonishing:
On Varjo base:
- Enable vertical synchronization and set to 30 fps (you can set to 45 fps but then you’ll have to turn down the visual options in MSFS, and quite honestly, 30 fps is very smooth)
- Turn on motion smoothing and set to “Enable if app supports it”
- I set my resolution quality to 39 ppd (note that setting it to 37 gives you an extra 10 fps and quite frankly, I can hardly see the difference)
On OpenXR Toolkit
- The only thing I enable (or set) here is frame rate throttling, I set that to 30 fps to match the varjo setting
- For information purposes, you may want to set the target frame rate to 30 and enable the fps to display so that you can see if your gpu is being overloaded (this will be helpful to determine how far you can push your MSFS settings before your GPU can’t make the set 30 fps)
In MSFS
- In the VR settings I use TAA. I know DLSS faster but it is blurry. Even with TAA I have to lean in to read some of the really small writing on the buttons and MFD/PFD, DLSS is even worse. So I use TAA and set the render scaling to 100.
- As for all the other settings, I toggle the global rendering quality to ultra then I check in game using the OpenXR Toolkit fps display to see if my GPU is having trouble hitting the 30 fps. If the gpu is struggling, I turn down some of the settings that aren’t important to me.
Hope this is helpful to some folks experiencing the same problem. Chalk and cheese for me. I’ve also noticed that my 4090 gpu has gone from constantly running at around 95% down to sometimes even as low as 55% usage if I’m not panning around too much
