SU2 Beta: Severe FPS Drop on Takeoff & Landing – Inconsistent but Persistent

I’m experiencing severe FPS drops (single-digit FPS, i.e. 5 FPS) specifically when rolling on the runway during takeoff and landing. When this occurs, it often results in my overall FPS being cut in half (or worse) for the rest of the session, requiring a full sim restart to recover.

Sometimes, FPS partially recovers (around 80% of normal) after takeoff or returning to the main menu, but a full restart is usually needed.

This issue happens on both analog and glass cockpit aircraft. It does not happen on helicopters (since it doesnt roll on runways during takeoff/landing).

It was present in SU1, though not consistently, even when testing at the same airport with the same aircraft. It does also happen in different airports. However, so far, in SU2, it happens more frequently (worse performance overall).

If this were purely a system specification issue, I would expect the FPS drop to be persistent and consistent. However, since it does not always happen under the same conditions, this inconsistency suggests another underlying cause.

Same ptoblem here. However I deleted my old rolling cache, deleted Nvidia DXcache and Disk cleanup the nvidia shader cache and system file. Now i am getting 35fps at Eddf on runway and during take off. Crusing is now 50 to 60 fps. Worth a try

Same problem here.

While hoping the next SU fixes this, you could always try to delete the Rolling Cache before starting the sim. Repeat the deletion only when you make drastic changes to the graphics sliders, especially Building, Plants, Rocks, Grass and ground related options. See if it fixes the single digit take off roll.

I am not really sure but I think the latest 1.4.9 Beta seems to reduce this issue. Anyone has tried it?

After extensive testing, I’ve noticed that certain aircraft in MSFS 2024 are prone to FPS drops specifically during the takeoff and landing roll. This seems directly tied to texture resolution settings, particularly for users with 8GB or less VRAM.

For example, the Cessna Caravan struggles with medium texture resolution, causing FPS drops and stutters below 80 knots. Lowering it to low eliminates the issue. The Porter PC-6 is even worse—it’s a VRAM hog and practically unflyable even texture are set to low. The Cessna 400 Corvallis also has noticeable FPS dips, though not as severe as the others.

This issue doesn’t seem to be related to glass cockpits. The Cessna 172 G1000, for instance, performs just fine without any FPS drops on rollout. Some aircraft that don’t have this problem include the Grumman Goose, De Havilland Beaver, XCub, all rotorcraft, and likely other simpler GA aircraft like the C152 and Robins.

The latest beta does improve VRAM management, and overall performance has been the best I’ve seen so far. But it’s clear that some aircraft still need further optimization.

Lowering texture resolution remains the best solution for now. This isn’t new information, but it’s still the most effective way to prevent stutters and FPS drops during takeoff and landing.

Personally, I’m sticking with low texture resolution for a smoother experience. The trade-off is less detailed aircraft textures, but to compensate, I can freely increase settings like grass, plants, rocks, road traffic (which is more CPU-dependent), ambient occlusion, contact shadows, and displacement mapping, even TREES!

MSFS 2024 is definitely heading in the right direction performance-wise, but hopefully, Asobo will address aircraft optimization in future updates. Until then, tweaking texture resolution is key to avoiding single fps drop during runaway contact.

Or, one can set texture resolution to MED or even HIGH but only in certain aircraft.

@jazzman3084 Heads up that I am moving your thread to Sim Update 2 Beta | MSFS 2024 > Install, Performance & Graphics

Are you still experiencing this as of the latest beta build version 1.4.12.0, which released on April 11?

Is the game behaving like this? (look when then pushback is over and I start to taxi):

But this is what happen now with my game while flying from SANTOS DUMONT (RIO DE JANEIRO), airport which comes with the new world update.

I already tried to downgrade my drivers (572.xx to 566.36) and “downgrade” from the SU2 beta to non beta.

My specs are mid (Ryzen 5600X, 32GB DDR4 3600MHz and a RTX 4070 SUPER), but this isn’t how the game worked before (I was out for work for almost 3 weeks, and then the game started to behavior like this when I came back).

Yes. I do still experience this.

Still experiencing this on SU2 Beta .12. Not experiencing this on SU1.
This is with both 3rd party AND default airports. .

System:
9800X3d
64GB RAM
4070 Super
Win 11 24H2

Airports where this was noticed:
LFPG (default)
EBBR (3rd party)
LFMN (3rd party)

I provided screenshots of the debug fps meter in this thread: [1.4.11.0] Main and/or render thread maximizes on landing at airports - #20 by WreckedCarpet66

To note if it helps:
it’s around runways and ON runways and it’s only when the camera is moving laterally/forwards/backwards on said runway. if you stop and don’t move the camera, FPS resume to normal. VRAM usage jumps way up as well and the stuttering is worse the faster the camera moves.

Please give me a few more hours, I will elaborate my conclusion so far. Mostly positive with some caveats. Thanks

The last two beta releases seem to have significantly reduced the frequency of severe FPS drops during takeoff. Additionally, lowering my texture resolution to Low may have contributed to the improvement. While the issue still occurs occasionally, it’s far less persistent than in earlier builds.

We all know that tarmac is related to texture resolution. Therefore, some airports remain more prone to this bug than others. Notably, Halim Perdanakusuma International (WIHH) and Pondok Cabe (both in Jakarta) still exhibit performance problems. Interestingly, these airports were also prone to CTDs in FS2020, which makes me wonder if they were simply ported over without refinements. I hope this isn’t the case, but the pattern is concerning.

In earlier builds, a full sim restart was often required to recover from sudden FPS drops. Now, a quicker workaround seems to help, switch global settings to Low (temporarily). Secondly, switch it back to desired settings. This appears to “flush” the VRAM and restore normal performance without a full restart.

While the improvements are encouraging, there’s still room for optimization, especially at certain airports. If anyone else has more information, it would be much appreciated.

Also in my case, even if things have slightly improved in SU2 beta (but I have also moved some graphics sliders to the left…), the most annoying issue is lack of fluidity during takeoff and, ABOVE ALL, landing roll. The speed-up or speed-down immersion is greatly reduced at seeing micro stutters and runway centerline dashes not flowing smoothly under the airplane…

This problem exists for me from the release of 24.

Stutters on take off and landing/taxing on bigger handcrafted Airports like Heathrow, eddf, kjfk etc..

still no fix its a mess

Yes same here, even those with RTX 40 series.
