Sound advice ![]()
Actually you didnāt lose much.
I shouldāve mentioned in my post that, although backing up the content saves you a huge amount of downloading, most of the content didnāt work with SU5 so it had to be updated anyway.
That for me was the one exception.
That of course can happen (after the update), but the content of the Community folder will not influence the update in any way.
MS advise us to clear the community folder; thatās good enough for me.
Better safe than sorry.
Thanks - Very good information and tips.
Thatās true - but read my post as to why it is a helpful thing to do, and Asobo recommend this themselves (this was from world update 6):
- For PC users: Some packages in your community folder may not have been updated and, as a result, may have an unexpected impact on the titleās performance and behavior. Please move your community package(s) to another folder before relaunching the title if you suffer from stability issues or long loading times.
There have also been reports from people where it DID influence the sim update.
Also bear in mind that when the update finishes, the sim continues to load - potentially with broken community folder material that could lead to an immediate crash. This is what that step is trying to avoid.
As I said above, you donāt have to do any of this if you donāt want to.
Thatās after the update.
But that doesnāt mean that itās productive to remove everything from the Community folder before updating. Only if you experience problems after updating should you empty it to check if something in it is now incompatible with the sim.
Absolutely nothing goes on in the Community folder during an update, so moving it proactively only serves as one more thing that can go wrong if you fumble.
The general guide lines from Asobo, that you quote yourself in another post, clearly supports me on this if you read it carefully.
Iāve got about 60+ items in my community folder (planes, liveries, scenery packs ) and Iāve never done anything before an update and never had a problem..Iāll be doing the same as usual, hit the install button, wait for it to finish, restart my pc and then go flying ![]()
This is great what you did⦠but 2021 is the year we are in⦠App upgrades should not require step by step instructions and this much effort. All these draconian steps (folder and backup management) need to be done in the background.
That you for your very clear, detailed instructions.
Microsoft, the update is cumbersome!
and only IF you suffer from stability issues- which i have rarely ( if ever ) experienced.
YMMV i guess
Iām not going to argue with anyone who says this is all not required, never had a problem etc. It is entirely your choice what you do.
However, here is what Asobo included in the patch notes for World Update 6 (specifically for @pdeswardt @NeilPearlJam @hendis55 @kaha300d):
Do I need to do anything with add-ons in the community folder?
We highly recommended that you move the content from your community folder to a temporary location on your hard drive before applying the patch and replacing after testing the new version.
Note the use of the words ābefore applying the patchā.
You can see the whole patch notes/help guide here:
Also, if you want a flavour of the angst, wailing and general gnashing of teeth that these updates can create, a lot of which is caused by not doing some simple things to make it go more smoothly, have a cruise through the rest of the thread I just linked.
It is, of course, entirely up to you what you do, so with that I bid you adios.

Well itās already Wednesday in Auckland so for some , no.
Microsoft, the update is cumbersome!
P3D was cumbersome, especially when the client updates didnāt work afterwards and you had to reinstall e-v-e-r-y b-l-o-d-d-y addon for hours on end. Renaming a Community folder is so much easier or following the checklist above. Even with all the bugs and problems MSFS2020 had in the meantime - my flying-to-tinkering ratio is much better. Less config-headaches and more aviation. Letās hope that this update works well for you and me both - in fact for all fellow virtual aviators ![]()
Also delete all files and folders from

Great adviceGordon above appreciated
