I was able to successfully create a flight plan (C172G1000) from KATL to KCHA, execute it, and successfully fly it. I don’t like the G1000, guess it is a learning thing. Getting the AP to work correctly is work, which I need to spend more time with just so I know how to do it. I also need to review old documentation on VOR to VOR (analog) navigation.
But the flight went great, used real world weather, which loaded all the thunderstorms and such we have going on in the area now. It tells you the elevations needed to successfully transition from cruise to approach altitudes. The little navigation bacons in the air are nice, but the VFR map works about as good.
I did not setup ILS approach, although it’s possible in this plane. But my biggest complaint is I cannot print out the navigation log, and that is not created unless you add at least one, VOR, or other navigation aide for the flight. For high level flights, those might be included automatically so the plan is directly input in the FMC. Which will be another big learning curve. MS-Make it so the flight log is printable, if I have a record to look at it makes it easier for me to fly. Real world pilots have that choice.
What the Sim needs is a Boeing 737, or the 737 Max (ok this one wont have old stuff in it) , which is a small commercial plane, with older equipment easily configured and setup. The AP in the 737 is pretty easy to figure out and program, without the FMC.
you can do a printable log in Skyvector.
You can go to the flight plan window in the g1000 and see it there. I use that for altitude references. Also, I love the 787. It is programs well and the AP works well also. It also is pretty nimble for its size which, in the real world, is due not only to the shape but the composite materials so it flies like a smaller airliner. If you have it its is worth the try. The 787 and tmb are my favorites and behind that is the caravan (mainly for flying in Indonesia and because I skydive out of one a lot so I have that attachment to it as well.
My project this evening is to program a 787 flight from KATL to Omaha to get the sense of how it all works. It will take some time, since everything I do will be new. I did a for fun flight around midway, island in the pacific but I just could not get the plane to land, so quit the flight. It’s in the logbook, which is why we need a delete entry feature in their. Thank you for the information. Once I get used to doing all the stuff, it won’t be such a challenge.
I never did get this done. I have been concentrating on the G1000 in various models. In automobiles, Garman is backwards to what I am used to in My RV, (Lowrance/Magellan), which work in my opinion logically. The one in the Jeep, took some getting used to, newer ones I think may be garman. The airplane version again is a whole different method and so nothing to fall back on from FSX, as almost never flew small planes in it. Was taught how to navigate from DC-10 pilots and they had FMC even then, I wish I had kept all the charts they gave me. For FS-G1000 is going to take several videos to learn. I have three or four saved to PC and can watch them at leisure. Captain Emilie, Captain Mac, Squirrel, Captain Bob, and several other YT’ers have various training videos, and most are very well done. But, wish I had training in the sim with split screen so I could do the task and see the results in the real G1000 window.
