Sudden Disruption in Flight Controls

Has anyone had an issue of total loss of control of aircraft when toggling between Autopilot ON/OFF?

I was flying a Textron Aviation Beechcraft Bonanza G36 and I had turned off the autopilot when the aircraft took an deep nose dive and caused an overstress failure. I really don’t think I touched anything on the flight panel or buttons on the joystick (which should not cause such a rapid loss of control).

Also, while flying autopilot with Altitude Hold. I tried to increase or decrease the altitude by turning the adjusting knob but not effect. It seems that you have to achieve the altitude you want then push the altitude hold button on the panel.

Can anyone give me any clues? I know I’m still in the learning phase.

Depending on aircraft:

  1. Set AP to ON
  2. Increase/Decrease target altitude as required, using the ALT knob.
  3. Select the AP ALT mode to ON. Nothing happens at this point.
  4. Select the AP VS mode to ON. Still nothing happening.
  5. Increase/Decrease Vertical Speed using the “NOSE UP” / “NOSE DN” buttons on the MFD to increase/decrease climb rate - whether your target altitude is above or below current altitude.
