The first item in the forum menu is Topics, which is somewhat vague. I know what it is (now) but then I’ve been here a while.
Does anyone agree with me that it’d be an improvement, and also help newcomers?
I assume you mean the button in the sidebar 
It does link to your unread topics, so I wouldn’t say changing the name would be a terrible idea.

You can filter the topics by latest post via the main middle menu as can be seen by the screenshot above.

Yes, that one. No, it doesn’t take you to your unread topics, it takes you to all the latest topics, unread or not. Hence my suggestion.
