Switching from a 4K SX to a 1080p PC

Hi everybody, currently I own an Xbox Series X but I’m considering to build a PC to enjoy all the quality-of-life add-ons. However my budget at the moment only allows me to afford a 3060ti, which would give me 1080p ultra, maybe 1440p high.

I’m using a 42’ LG C2 and my main concern is picture sharpness regarding instrument visualization. I mostly fly IFR so I’m afraid the instruments would be too blurry to see and I don’t want to zoom around the cockpit all the time.

I would like to know if someone experienced such transition or had played in both hardware in such conditions and if I should expect much of a hit regarding my concerns.

I switched from a 4K ultra wide to a 2k LG 32” (both on PC) and much prefer the 2K, much easier on my eyes.

I have a Series X with a 28" 4K display.

I have a Razer Blade 15" that I sometimes use with a 27" 1080p display.

You will definitely see and feel the downgrade. I would try to make the 1440p step, if possible.

For example, on my PC w/ 27" 1080p I cannot read the recommended speed table placard on the overhead panel on the DC-6 without moving the camera over and zooming in closely. On my Xbox w/ 28" 4K I can read it perfectly with the default overhead cockpit view. The same goes for switch placards. They are ill defined in 1080p and difficult to read, but super crisp and clear in 4K.

I know that the difference between 1440p and 4K is more subtle on smaller displays, but that 42" is going to really reflect the differences between 1080p, 1440p and 4K.

A typical 4K monitor will display 1440p (2K) without noticeable scaling artifacts. It will display 1080p perfectly. This question concerned me when first switching to 4K for work and home computers.

There is no need to buy a low resolution monitor for better appearance or performance on resolution alone. You may choose a lesser resolution monitor for it’s other model specific merits.

MSFS has good display scaling and more options with nVidia GPU. So you can run at 4K scaled up on-game vs display scaling on monitor or GPU. The instruments are clearer to read with scaling vs lower res native. I care about instrument readability a lot.

I have not found this to be the case with my Asus 28" 4K display. If I hook my PC up to it, and run it at 1080p it is very clear that it’s not running a native resolution and looks poorly.

That’s exactly what I was afraid. Thanks for pointing this up.

Is your LG a TV or a bespoke 4K display? I’m fairly sure a TV has the ability to handle lesser resolutions well, whereas my bespoke 4K display does not.

You might want to see if there are other users in other places (Reddit, for example) that are running a similar display at a lower resolution than 4K with good results.

Glad to know

Not sure about this bespoke thing. Will look into it. And I asked Reddit once and got no response.

I can’t speak for specific monitors. I have used 4K Dell, Viewsonic, Philips, Sony and Acer at physical sizes 15" to 32". If you have nVidia, try setting display scaling to GPU instead of monitor (it won’t affect performance and may improve quality.) nVidia also has ‘integer’ scaling, which will precisely convert 4K to 1080p without any smoothing effect.

Why only 1080p? I have only a 3060 non ti and am very happy using a 2880x1620 resolution, all ultra DLSS + DLAA @ 30-40fps or DLSS quality @ 45-60fps.

I’m planning to use heavy add-ons like the Fenix A320, and I’ve seen most comments saying that the bare minimum for playing at 4K is a 3070ti. But I’m glad to know it works fine for you.

That shouldn’t really affect graphics performance though, just make sure your cpu is good enough. I’m on a 5800X using PBO undervolting however I only fly GA or gliders.

PS. it’s not 4k but better than 2k (with about the same performance), I use this custom res because dlss (quality) downscales it very nicely to 1080p. 4k is possible but only with markedly reduced graphics and for me that’s not worth it.

When I ran @ 1080p I used TAA and upscaled to 2k resolution. This makes the text a lot more readable on 1080p display. That said, if you’re worried about performance @ 2k then this won’t help. Now, it was a 24inch 1080p, so perhaps a larger 1080p monitor would be easier to read, but I can say I definitely had to zoom in when rendering @ 1080p.

I think your choke point will be CPU not GPU. You should be able to run 1440p with a decent CPU & 3060Ti imo. Just not in Ultra.

I run @ 1440p with an RTX2060. It’s fine. Though I mostly fly GA.
