SWS Vans RV-14 is out

This may be the best VR airplane in the sim now between the canopy and clarity of the instrument panel!

My favorite glass cokpit system is the G1000 NXi but I appreciate having a touch screen system.

What I’ve found is dropping full flaps too early will slow you down too much, unless you come in high and fast. My favorite approaches are as described above, but not for everybody I’d guess… or correct at a controlled field.

The lights at night are bright. I’ll have to see if I can find a solution to that. If I have any luck I’ll post what I’ve found.

Cheers!

While it is bright it isn’t overly problematic. In most airplanes, the bright lights can cause glare issues in the VR headsets but for some reason in the RV-14 it doesn’t.

But There is just something a bit unnatural about how the whole interior glows in the RV-14. The only light sources I can tell are there are the display screens. I keep looking back to see if there are dome lights on but it’s all canopy. In some ways it’s kind of helpful. Some of the Asobo airplanes do this too. The Cessna 172 classic is super dark and the Cessna 152 also has a mystery interior glow. It may just have something to do with how the developers light the interior.

Thanks for the tips on the flaps. I’m used to airplanes being a bit harder to slow down. I’m landing this like it’s a Bonanza or TBM.

I’m on a world tour with the Bonanza but I take the RV-14A out for site seeing tours when I get to interesting locations.

Holy moly, this plane is amazing! Just had my first flight around my hometown and I couldn’t believe the performance and handling of that thing. I was zipping around places from my younger years like there’s no tomorrow. And the views you get in this thing, oh my god. Absolutely fabulous! Looking forward to see how it fares as GA plane on plain boring point A to point B flights.

The performance stats are good for A to B! Even if the landing gear don’t retract.

But it’s tough to beat a WT G1000 NXi equipped airplane in MSFS for a good navigation workhorse. The GTN750 is nice, and better in many ways, but for some reason I miss the G1000 NXi. Perhaps the next Garmin G1000 will be touch screen.

How are you doing with landings? That’s the point where this airplane gets a bit tough. Under certain speeds this airplane loseses control authority. Seven7Tango’s method does seems to work well at least - come in hot and hit the brakes.

The RV-14A is a little like the JMB VL-3, which is an underrated Asobo airplane.

I found landing not too bad, actually managed a nice three-point landing by sheer luck yesterday.

But I did spend a few hours yesterday on a number or Asobo tail draggers (Pitts Special, Savage Cub) to make progress for my “Jack of all planes” achievement before I bought the RV-14, so I was kind of in the groove and found them actually more difficult to land in comparison.

And there is always the RV-14A if I am not on the mood I guess.

I was outside yesterday and someone zoomed directly over my house at low level in an RV. I didn’t identify the model because they were moving along at a really good clip but I came inside and bought this module immediately. That’s called motivation folks!

Impressive! I hate takeoff and landing in tail draggers, lol. You can’t even see where you are going in the Pitts. The Spitfire tends to be my worst takeoff airplane. The Savage Cub isn’t too bad though.

I’ve been flying a lot of tail draggers lately because they seem to be my favorites despite not being able to take off and land in them.

From what I have the JU-52 and Goose are the easiest to take off and land in, the JU-52 especially.

The RV-14 and most others I’d say are average in the bad MSFS taildragger physics department

The Pitts and the Cessna 170 there’s almost no point in even taxiing because I’ll probably be lifting off from the grass or a taxiway somewhere

Have you tried the Spitfire? Takeoff is near impossible but I can manage to land it. I can’t imagine the real Spitfire would be as hard as it is in the sim.

I’ve got the prop not turning over issue after the patch as well as the plane is now causing CTDs on MSFS 2020 load. It’s repeatable and the only mod in my Community folder. Take it out and the CTDs stop. Hope they fix it soon.

Which GTN750 mod do you have installed?

2.1.37. Just pulled it last night.

And you have the correct RV-14 mod installed to work with the PMS50 version?

Latest of both.

You need three mods installed:

Airplane: sws-aircraft-vansrv14
GTN750: pms50-instrument-gtn750
RV-14 PMS50: sws-aircraft-vansrv14-pms50

Hi,

Can anyone show me where the flaps indicator is on the panel?

I can change the flaps position via the switch, but I can’t tell what the position is other than looking out the window.

Other than keeping track of that in your head, I think looking over your shoulder is your only option with the G3X.

@SiRRiPPERORiG Question… What kind of airspeed should be required to windmill the prop? I flew into PHOG just now and my parking spot faced almost directly into the 39 kt. wind that was blowing, and the prop just kept windmilling after shutdown. The prop lever had no effect.

I think the issue here is I’m missing the “sws-aircraft-vansrv14-pms50” folder in my community folder even though I select the option from Orbx. It appears they are not dropping the mod when selected in their configuration tool. At least on my machine, anyway. Tested multiple times and it never shows up in the community folder.

This prop doesn’t have a feathering option, according to my reference material. Its coarsest pitch is 35 degrees which will result in windmilling of the propeller as long as there is relative wind.

@banananimal6685 please report your finding to ORBX so they can sort it out, especially if it worked before.
