Tail Number Problem

I need help with a livery tail #.
I downloaded C172S livery file WhiskyTango_Livery_C172Classic_OO_ADO_SXCFz.zip, extracted to get WhiskyTango_Livery_C172Classic_OO_ADO & moved it into Community.
I opened . / SimObjects / Airplanes / Asobo_C172sp_classic_OOADO / aircraft.CFG. In line ui_variation = “OOADO” I replaced the “OOADO” with “N4266Q”. In line atc_id = “ “ ; tail number I inserted “N4266Q” between the “ “.
I ran MSFS. The result in in the attached screenshot. The original tail # is still there, and the new # I entered shows up also.
That obviously wasn’t right. I deleted the folder from Community, re-extracted the original download & moved the result into Community, but with no changes. The new tail # is still there!! MSFS apparently stores it someplace else.
How do I get rid of it?
Is there any way to change the original tail # so it shows up correctly?

This is what happens when a registration is included in a livery’s paint. Short of altering the model files, I don’t know of any way to display a blank reg on the model. If you delete your registration from the Customization screen, it will revert to the default specified in the aircraft.cfg, and from my own limited testing, if you try to make a blank registration there, the sim absolutely does not like that. It locked my sim up so tight that I had to use the task manager to shut it down.

Yep. Some models support custom tail numbers, and some do not.

When they do support custom tail #'s, you pretty much have to use them. If you leave it blank in the customization screen, it reverts to whatever is spec’d in the cfg file. These are the ones where you don’t want to have a registration in the paint.

@CrosscutTag1796 If the livery artist posted a screenshot of the livery in-flight with no custom reg. showing on the tail, try contacting them and asking how they did it. I can’t figure out how to get a blank tail without locking the sim. If you get a successful method, post it here so the rest of us can try.

To blank out the MS-applied custom reg and use the hand-painted, static one (note: that cannot change from what the author painted on the livery) you need to go into the addon livery’s panel.cfg and comment out the section related to external registration. Not at my gaming system until hours from now but somewhere in the block should related to the keywords external and registration.

I know where you’re talking about. If I did that, I’d build a second copy of the panel called “Panel.noreg” and reference that one in the [fltsim.x] section for that repaint.

In my new C172SP livery the spurious tail number ‘N4266Q’ looked just like the one on the Asobo default classical model (same shape & location), except for the color. Per a post by another simmer (thank you!!), I opened the file: ‘Community (up a level *) Official > Onestore > Asobo-aircraft-c172sp-classic > SimObjects > Airplanes > Asobo_C172sp_classic > panel > panel.cfg’ and in the lines: ‘painting00=Registration/Registration.html?font_color=white, 0, 0, 256, 64’ and ‘painting00=Registration/Registration.html?font_color=0x49668e, 0, 0, 1024, 256’ I replaced the ‘0, 0, n, n’ following ‘color=’ with ‘0, 0, 0, 0’. That removed the spurious tail #. It was also gone from the default Asobo C172SP Classic model (as expected).

  • the easiest way for me to get to the ‘Official’ folder!

The simmer who helped me get rid of the spurious tail # in the custom C172SP livery was benmix1701 - thanks!
