I’ve been flying the BAe 146-200 on a non-GPS tour across Siberia. Lots of NDB and dead-reckoning due to scarcity of VOR stations. I ran into an interesting challenge when flying into UUYW/Vorkuta. There are Terminal NDB Navaids with duplicate frequencies on either end of the runway.
522 kHz is broadcast by both DW and KZ on opposite Rwy 8/26 approaches.
315 kHz is broadcast by both D and K similar to above.
It caught me off guard because I neglected to confirm the morse signal inbound on the STAR and had a confusing transition to the ILS because I was transitioning over the wrong NDB.
After a bit more searching in Navigraph, I’ve found a few other airports in the Russian arctic circle that feature this kind of setup. I’ve searched and so far haven’t found descriptions of how these scenarios work. How do RL flights distinguish the navaids? Does the airport only activate one pair at a time? If that’s the case, I imagine IRL flight service provides that info…but in MSFS is there a way to tell which will be active? (I was landing on the correct runway, per current winds, but the NDB I picked up was from the wrong/opposite approach.)
Anyway, if anybody has any ideas or had to cope with these before, I’d be grateful for any info or experiences.
