TERRIBLE LOD is destroying a potentially great sim

I always play in VRR mode (with uncapped frame rate) and I can confirm that average fps has definitely improved a lot, comparing to SU10. Asobo should have tweeked some graphic options to get such gains. Even if the specific LOD bug of SU11 has been fixed, I am pretty sure they have reduced the terrain LOD as e.g. trees are not rendered far enough. Also, the off-screen terrain pre-caching has been reduced: objects pop in is very noticeable when changing the camera orientation, especially in PG area’s

Yep, noticed this.

Is this a bad thing? No, not in my opinion as long as it benefits the performance and it sure does look that way. On Xbox at least.

I use to rotate the camera quite often to appreciate the landscape, especially over PG cities. I find those pops-in quite distracting. But I agree that higher and stable fps is even more important. I think the compromise of SU10 was better though. NB: I do not use third-party contents.

We definitely need a clear explanation from Asobo about the graphic options they adjusted since SU10. Just confirming that the specific LOD bug is fixed is not enough

Just installed the Beta, and I’m experiencing exactly the opposite: terrible LOD, noticeable even in cockpit, and super slow texture loading. Back to the public build

Built up areas are horrendous with the rendering and lod. This Beta is even a step back from SU11. I’m losing faith in this team now to be honest.

Not sure if this should be its own post, but it seemed germane so I’ll ask it here:

I just watched this video from Sim Hanger

https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/clG_8HpTlGM

And in the video Mark demonstrated that decreased AI traffic = more FPS, and decreased LOD = more FPS.

What I want to know is, could this mean decreased AI traffic = more LOD? (Assuming the system is capping the FPS)

My instinct is no, that just because both can be traded for FPS doesn’t mean they can be traded for each other, but I’d like to hear from people who know more than me. My reasoning is that CPU and GPU power are not interchangeable, but then again the XBOX only has one pool of shared RAM.

I have AI traffic up really high on my series X and have noticed no FPS problems at all (whether just general sluggishness or stuttering), but if reducing it meant more object or terrain detail out further I would gladly reduce AI traffic all the way down.

Thoughts?

I feel you. Even though I’m seeing improvements myself.. It still frustrates me that there’s not much consistency in user experience, as you would expect when running anything on this closed box of ours. First and foremost the sim is getting bloated with 3rd party add-ons along with a patching the patches approach to updates. And then I’ve even heard a couple times of people giving up with troubleshooting and turning in their xbox for a new model as the only solution (anecdotal, I know).. Then again we’re probably spoiled with stability and out the box functionality compared to many PC users. But still it’s worse than expected.

Most of my experience is with Sony, and their TVs have a “smooth gradation” feature that can be adjusted to smooth out color banding. Its function is a trade off between detail and smoothness, with three settings to choose from. I don’t know much about TCL’s settings, but you might check to see if they have something similar.

Also, what color depth do you have your XBOX set to? You can choose from 8-bit color (24-bit per pixel setting), 10-bit color (30-bits per pixel), or 12-bit color (32-bits per pixel). Your TV likely has a 10-bit panel, so setting the XBOX to 10-bit color (30 bits setting - I know, confusing) will minimize color banding that would occur if you set it to a lower (8 bit color) setting. You can also set it to 12-bit color, but it doesn’t provide any advantage over 10-bit with today’s content.

I think its the fact I’ve purchased the gqme, spent roughly £400 on add-ons, sunk well over 400 hours and seen it go from absolutely terrible to SU10 perfect, or as close to as i had seen since SU6. Also, it’s the fact that Asobo communication is terrible! Removal of thunderstorms without saying, and live weather being problematic still. Slippage of dates and no mention of when things will be resolved

Turned down Fauna, traffic, airport traffic and whatever else to 0
 Made no difference for me

No problem at all! I am so surprised that even people on the same ecosystem, are having so many different issues!

Yes, it’s interesting how the results are always different
yesterday I did some local flights in New Zealand and I was surprised to see how much better the LOD was than the “new normal”. I could see the buildings in central Auckland from many miles away, very different from the flight the day before, where the buildings at Heathrow were popping up when I was less than 3 miles from the runway
(this happens at other airports also)

New York and Los Angeles have bee the worst for me. Heathrow and London have been bad, but not as bad as the aforementioned. Yet, Abu Dhabi, when i took of from there was absolutely perfect! No issue whatsoever.

Yeah, it is bad on both my Series S & X, embarrassingly bad!

Asobo says they fixed the original LOD issue, however, they obviously broke something else and have not figured out what yet, or know what the issue is and are not communicating it with us customers and it is getting very frustrating for all of us.

The only other thing I can think of is that it is this feature that people in this thread are talking about to keep the FPS consistent, however, if it is that why can’t Asobo just communicate that with us?! It would make things so much easier for us, and for them. I know Asobo, to put it nicely, is not very good at communicating with us about many things, but come on.

Just an example, I used to be able to fly over an airport I did not know well, from just a few hundred feet above it to a thousand feet plus (I do not remember exactly how high I could go before I could not read the runway numbers) but now I cannot even fly over an airport 500 feet above it and read the runway numbers. It is that bad.

I have reinstalled the game, and that does not help. I am experiencing everything else that people in this thread are experiencing and for me it is ruining the game. I know there are two schools of thought on this about cutting back on the LOD to keep the game more stable, or to keep the LOD high and risk the game not being as stable. I think we, the customers, should have a choice on which we want and there should be some way for us to choose which we want in the settings.

I really hope this gets fixed in SU12!!

Happy flying everyone!

Sorry to hear youre having the same issues as a lot of us, and i know how it feels. Used to love this game and the experience it gave. Slowly, i can feel myself getting more and more annoyed with it. Currently doing a transatlantic flight with my mate, and taking off from New York with the most low texture city I’ve seen in a long time.

Asobo, please listen to xbox owners. We’re not moaning for moaning sake. No Thunderstorms from SU7, live weather still does not work correctly, LOD/rendering is horrendus, and the night lighting on the ground is poor when you pan the camera, loading in squares and then large patches of darkness that eventually loads in.

What I wrote some days ago

“But I do remember when I’ve been told by ATC to land XX and I am not sure which runway it is, I used to circle to find which runway it is. I know I might broke some rules there, but with plane when looked out the window to catch the runway number written there, they were sharper or even with showcase mode.”

I am gonna repeat myself but I think we need an option to choose performance/graphic.

I usually restart the game after each flight. So I would not my mind to start it in graphic mode with 152 and then when I wanna fly A310 or let’s say 737! Restart the game again..

Whilst i do agree with you, if you cast your mind back to SU10, that had the best of both on Series X

Yeah that was well balanced. But we haven’t got an aircraft which is so demanding like A310. And here comes WASM and other aircraft will use it. Means more demanding planes.

It’s clear that this sim on Xbox X , can’t handle complex aircraft (avionics and or graphic vise) and the graphics we used to see and love at the same time..

Let’s hope what WASM brings won’t let them tune graphics lower.

If WASM causes lower LOD than the garbage we currently have, there should be an option to turn WASM on and off.

If you have no planes that use WASM, no need to have it on. If you do have a plane that uses it, turn it on for that flight and then back off when using a plane that doesn’t require it. It could not possibly be that hard to create an on/off toggle for us Xbox users.

I doubt WASM will cause issues with graphics though, and I have a feeling we will see whatever issue we are facing right now when it comes to LOD fixed is SU12 despite them saying they fixed the LOD issue in the AAU1 update. Call me an optimist, but I think we will see some progress.

Asobo also needs to stop tying in all fixes to a SU, and release hot patches for issues that effect the game so negatively that we the users do not want to wait 2-3 months for a fix! That always has been a major pet peeve of mine when it comes to them fixing things!
