Texture Resolution and Restart

Could I get some clarity on the graphic settings? I notice the sim doesn’t prompt for restart when changing Texture Resolution. Are we to understand that restart is no longer required when changing Texture Resolution? Also, it appears as though 2D and VR settings for Texture Resolution can be maintained separately, meaning 2D can be set to High while VR can be set to Medium. Is this correct?

Moved out from Sim Update 5 Beta | MSFS 2024 since not beta related.

Good question indeed and here is the screenshot to understand where your 1st question comes from:

Hopefully someone will be able to confirm if a restart is needed or not.
See related wish: Persistent warning when changing things that require restart of application

I would tend to think it is correct since the sim allows to save different settings in 2D & VR.

So, my experience is that restarting is required so the sim can generate shaders. If the sim allows separate settings for 2D and VR, it must be generating shaders for both. But if a user doesn’t have VR, what would be the point of setting up for VR? It’s a bit fuzzy.

Interesting question. Hopefully someone can clarify this?

The interesting observation here is that with the Fenix A320 and Ini A350 there is a direct effect on VRAM usage by toggling this switch and then resuming the flight. Setting it from HIGH to MEDIUM frees up 1 GB of VRAM on my system, and this comes back when switching to HIGH again (and then frees up when switching to MEDIUM etc). So there is a clear effect already without restarting the sim.

Also, in some airplanes you can clearly see that the textures are lower res after changing from HIGH to MEDIUM, without restarting. So yes, there absolutely is an immediate effect. Why the settings say a restart is required for changes to take effect I do not know.

True, I think the Just Flight Turbo Arrow is an example of this if I remember correctly.

Another is the FSR500 from FSReborn, it’s very easy to see the difference by looking closely at the switch decals behind the yoke for example.
