The future of world updates gives me conflicting emotions

With the announcement of the Japan world update, I am pleased to see that Bing/Asobo/MS/Blackshark? (1st party) is doing work and already have a world update release in month 2.

The conflicting emotion is that if they’re planning 1 country at a time… this product will be long past it’s lifecycle. It does seem like they’re also introducing the Japan autogen style so at least the rest of Japan that was passed up gets some improvements.

I would like to encourage Asobo to open up world generation to the community/sdk , and even the building “architecture” blueprints that determine how houses and other buildings/areas are generated for non photogrammetry areas. I know it won’t come tomorrow or even this year but if they make the platform, I’m sure there will be developers, free or paid, that can improve the look and feel of areas to match local architecture without having to handpick which locations to replace with a custom model.

Thanks for the read.

They already said updates are going to be by region. Japan probably gets its own so they can test out the process on a smaller area.

And there’s already commercial scenery makers who can use the SDK, and nothing stopping anybody from becoming one, as long as they have the skills. :small_airplane: :smiley_cat:

I meant the framework of the autogen. In cities skylines, mods can add a set of buildings or styles to use in game without the user having to manually replace or plop a certain building.

Has there been talks about opening that part of the framework up for 3rd parties? Like someone could create a Specific type of autogen for different regions instead of having all autogen handled by Asobo’s team only.

Or else it’ll be too slow.

10 years is a long time. This sim will look and perform very different in just 1 year.

It’d be nice if they gave 3rd parties, whether partners or community, to help fine tune some of the platform. Right now, the scenery replacement is 1 by 1 plot vs being able to overhaul regions at a time with the auto-gen.

That will be difficult, as the Autogen is handled by AI which is owned by blackshark AI.
The information is in turn stored on a server so it’s the same for everybody and will probably never be open to others messing with it. What could happen though is that they make a tool were you can train the AI for a certain regions.
Wouldn’t bet on it though. I think though the quality we get is worth this in my opinion small draw back.

There’s plenty of firms/companies out there that can work with AI. The expertise is out there if they want to take advantage.

I also get this feeling they don’t want too many companies involved here just yet. Since they are the first in this space they might want to hold onto unique IP for as long as possible. They don’t want to inadvertently give away too much secrets to those competitors behind in the prettiness department.

Oh yeah that’s what I meant they aren’t gonna give people outside of the project acctes to AI algorithms but maybe I’m wrong.

I’m sure they don’t need to give it all away. They just need new building sets to be trained.

It’s so easy for outsiders who don’t have to do the work to say “just” or “all they have to do is …” and I think that’s a bit silly. Actual software development projects are complex and a lot of work and coordination and adding to it isn’t “just” anything. :small_airplane: :smiley_cat:

I don’t believe I said easy. I said they should be doing it because it’ll bring more value to customers faster. The community could be expanding to areas that they won’t reach before 2030.

But 8 minutes ago:

I think having outsiders who don’t understand the development process trying to change it is very helpful.

It’s a good point.

But if a third party developed better scenery for my home region I’d buy it like a shot.

There no guarantee if or when MS will improve my area so I’d take the gamble.

Beyond the free world updates let’s also expect big payware DLCs providing to MS the necessary income for product development over the years. Licenses from the first release won’t be enough to finance development to such a high level of standard and given the huge amount of fixes and missing features still to come (hopefully).

“Just” does not mean easy/hard. It could be “part of” or other meanings. Stop attributing meaning to my words just cause you want to read it a certain way and make your point about outsiders.

I’d pay too if they can have more unique building sets so you know when you moved from San Diego to Temecula or other borders.
