That seems right to me, the sun is mainly to the south in the northern hemisphere, or is there something else that I’m not seeing?
That’s right. In the Northern hemisphere, the sun rises in the east and tracks south before setting in the west.
In fact, when you don’t have a compass, you can use this trick using a watch to determine which way North is (roughly).
