Thank goodness this came out as a separate program and not an update!!! Currently we can all keep using previous versions of MSFS and X-Plane and just wait for Microsoft and Asobo to get their act together. Considering the amount of money that I have spent on extras over the years I am sure that the Aviator edition will eventually work out for me. Considering how badly this release was botched… I am thinking it will be months down the road, but since I can keep simming away on simulators that are already pretty amazing it’s not that big of a deal to me personally.
Just tried out VR for the first time in MSFS2024.
Settings were set lower than MSFS2020 and I still got worse performance. It felt really choppy. Lots of graphical glitches fluttering across the screen (weird green lines appearing when walking around the preflight). Stutters with camera movement and also looking at the ground while flying over it. Quest 3’s ASW which works great for me in MSFS2020 was not really smoothing out the motion as well in 2024.
I will say the positive is that everything looked really really clear and the lighting was great (even though raytracing is unavailable in VR). The scene in motion though was just not good… it’s definitely a better experience in MSFS2020 overall, and that’s with DX12 as well.
I have high hopes they’ll improve the performance and iron out the kinks, but I was looking forward to better VR performance/support overall.
Add to it the mouse doesn’t track 3D surfaces as well as it does in 2020. It goes underneath some items and floats over other items.
This is often an issue in 3rd party airplanes but not usually default airplanes.
I agree with the need to address the myriads of VR bugs listed.
However, I am still enjoying it tremendously and performance for me is actually better than with 2020. For me the key for 2024 VR smoothness was proper frame pacing using RTSS.
how are you using frame gen in VR? No frame gen in VR.
Yes, there are bugs. Some really bad ones. We live in a world of “Continuous Improvement” Does it really have to be a Greek tragedy?
The Sim is different. The Look is different. It’s Better in my opinion.
The reality of VR is that old tricks don’t work. Anyone using toolkit or other tools to modify the VR experience are likely running into issues. Start with a Clean Driver, Swap your DLSS file from 2.4 to 3.8. Yes, 2024 was supposed to come with 3.0 in 566.14 but no, 2.4! Old add-ons will run on the 2024 .EXE without you knowing it. 2020 products in your community folder can cause major issues.
The big key to the experience is this Dynamic Settings and FPS target AND if you don’t have a 4080+, the high and ultra Setting force Shadow Ray tracing on. So, adjust according to your hardware 4070ti and lower can’t be too ambitious.
I didn’t think Ray tracing of any sort worked in VR, but this is a thing. For whatever reason, you can’t turn it off!
This sim is built for 2024 and newer hardware, especially in VR. All the winging about disappointment and unplayable all relate to not setting things up properly. Whose fault is that… Asobo’s! Their explanations of the tabs and setting is awful! Primitive and uninformative at best! What is a Displacement Mapping? What does Dynamic settings do? Specifically! People need to Breath. Express the factual problems and breath.
I tried VR. I wasn’t expecting much but OH BOY! This is an absolute nightmare. It is heartbreaking:
- The framerate is worse with no visual upgrade. I went from stable 45fps (2020) with everything on Ultra to 30ish FPS (2024).
- The C152 looks better in 2020: Here, there is no ‘texture’ on the textures and the colors are washed out. It feels like I’m piloting a plastic toy.
- The reflections in the windows are wrong and from the wrong plane.
- The reflections of the mountains in the water are moving.
- The rain effect is absent on the windshield and windows (well, it’s buggy)
- The clouds render differently in both eyes making it impossible to play in VR properly.
- The city lights are blinking and render differently in both eyes. They’re now little squares instead of little dots.
- We can’t click anywhere on the panels 1 out of 2 times.
- The instrument tooltips are HUGE and askew.
I just wanna add that I increased the performance in FS2024 in VR with the oculus link settings by changing the resolution to 1.0x. I can’t really notice it looking much worse than what I had it on for FS2020 which was 1.3x.
Not sure what’s happening with the resolution behind the scenes at this point but I’m just gonna leave it at that for now because at least it’s usable ![]()
I had better VR performance and better look now in 2024 just right from the beginning without touching anything ( nvidia 3090 , G2 reverb) , that was really good , also that Lowflying with jets works surprising good for me , Great performance ! BUT ;
simple bugs , like can not click with the mouse as i used to do make my experience not yet ready for going for a longer flight for now…
I will wait a while … PLUS :
Not able to fly my loved , purchased planes of 2020 ( will in future) and not able to fly BUSH trips because i can not get in the “Devmode” while in mission to change plane , because the plane is not activated or yet found allthough it is in the comunity folder . ?!
Not able to fly in VR Bushtrips is reason enough to shut down this 2024 sim for a while till some of this things get changed.
Why does the glass displays still have weird 3D stuff going on too, same as in 2020?
My performance is certainly worse than on FS2020 even in DX12 mode. Even with all options at minimum, I cannot get the same FPS as I achieved at medium settings in FS2020 (36 vs 25fps on a good day).
Surprisingly, the use of more cores in FS2024 does not seem to have helped at all in VR - looking at the FPS display, it seems to be equally limited by the CPU and GPU despite having an outdated GPU (GTX1080Ti) but a reasonable CPU (i9-12900K).
I do not hold out any hope of VR being fixed, certainly not in the near future, as there are so many things wrong with the sim they will need to look at first - for example, simple interface problems (settings not sticking when changed), bad decisions in the design (I find the constant rapid zooming in/out extremely nauseating), old problems reappearing (high GPU usage in the menus), and of course the problems with streaming which are still not sorted.
Try opening the discovery flight for Florence or fly the diamond DA40 in free flight using vr. 2024 will put you in the back seat everytime. Want to change a setting and come back to flying well back seat for you. You have to walk from the back seat to the front of the airplane. I have the aviators edition. Its a mess i figure it will be about a year for them to fix things in the interim I got a 9800x3d and will stick with 2020 edition because now four years later a processor exists to overcome the main thread limit. Ill see the 2024 edition sometime in 2028.
There’s a key binding you can use to cycle pilot position, maybe you can try that in the meantime…
Where and how did you find that? It’s be great if you could let us know. Thanks
There was a VR team ?? I was not aware but I do understand why they were dismantled if true lol.
On a side note, I’m enjoying my VR experience in 2024. EFB works for me and so is the menu toggle using the middle mouse (I set it to it). FPS are maybe a tiny few FPS lower than 2020 but I like all the new additions : Career, clouds, ground details, flight planner (truly amazing + there’s a WEB base planner too ! Not using simbrief at all anymore.
Go to controls and search for pilot position. I’m not at home so I can’t check.
Ok great thanks
I have not had a chance to go into VR yet (Valve Index) and I have only been in the game once for about an hour to check things out. I’ve been busy. Hopefully over Thanksgiving I will have more time.
I just wanted to throw a couple things out there for those who may not be geeky on the PC side or understand how things work or what they should be seeing if they are trying to figure out what component might be a bottleneck.
The easiest thing is to use Task Manager to see your utilization. I see a bunch of complaints in here about lower frames than msfs2020, but I don’t see anyone citing what their CPU, MEM and GPU utilization is.
If you are having trouble with low/less frames, check out your CPU, GPU and memory usage.
For memory you ideally want it to be around 50% usage or less. I have 2 x 24 DDR5 @7200 and I was using around 22gb in game (non-vr).
For CPU your ideal usage should be around 50% or less. I’m running an i7 14700k @ 25% utilization in game.
For GPU your ideal usage should be 98-100%. What your GPU at 100% means is that your GPU is being fully utilized. I’m running a 3080ti and it is at 98% utilization in game.
If you are not getting 98-100% out of your GPU in game then you are not getting full usage out of your GPU and that means there is a bottleneck somewhere. If your GPU is not 100% that means it is capable of generating higher frame rates, but something is keeping it from it’s full potential. Again, 100% GPU utilization is optimal and what you want to see!!
I am just throwing this out there for people who do not understand how this works. Maybe this will help them so they can check to see what might be causing a bottleneck.
I have no major complaints over the performance. A touch less FPS than 2020, but overall a very smooth experience.
The mouse bug however, is absolutely INFURIATING. I just don’t understand how on earth that wasn’t ironed out prior to launch.
In one or more the developer livestreams, they said they were treating VR as a platform for 2024, so it certainly sounded like they were putting more focus on it this time.
