Thinking of buying a new cpu for Msfs

I have the PSU and case size to go from a 2070 Super to a 3080 or 3080 ti.

For less than a grand…thinking hard about that. Would not be as disappointing as getting a new rig for $3,000 and being disappointed lol.

if you are upgrading, it shouldn’t be that much - wait a few more weeks and with the ryzen 7 launch, hopefully prices will come down.

Also check ebay/ amazon for deals or factory second units. they can be pretty good ! All the best.

And sell your existing CPU - the Ryzen 5 3600 is a very capable CPU for any other game !

Thinking about it last night, I have a 1TB SSD and 1TB HDD, a 750W platinum PSU, 32gb ram, i7-9700.

I am going to go ahead and blow my wad on a 3080ti because it will be plug and play in my current setup. Then if I ever want a new CPU I’ll just buy a new case, MB, and CPU and move everything else over because I am happy with everything else.

That is a very decent setup you got there - make incremental changes to it. As you use it, you’ll know what to change.
Good idea to change the GPU first - the 750W PSU is on its limit, but will work very well if it is a good unit.
My GPU RTX 3080 draws about 235W peak. This leaves ample room for other components and system ineffiencies.

Got my 3080ti in. only using about 5GB/12GB on the gpu and 3GB/32GB on the cpu. in dev mode it blinks back and forth between main thread/gpu, so assuming that means I am main thread bottlenecked and the GPU isn’t even straining. I would have thought that mean I could turn up the resolution and stay at the same FPS but I cannot. Still getting 40+ fps so I am happy.

If you’re in difficult scenery blinking back and forth between gpu and mainthread limited is a good place to be, it means both are at or close to 100% usage (mainthread core, not your whole cpu).

I literally just did that with exactly same specs as you. Went from 2070 to 3080ti. I also bought a 850 psu just in case (had a very good 750w which probably would have been just fine). It’s a really good move. I couldn’t be happier with the g2 + 3080ti combo. Thing’s a ■■■■ beast.

Yep I am enjoying it. Had issues being CPU limited but checked the Windows power settings and turning them to max performance (or whatever it is) solved that.

Really? Mine does 350w if i let it. I try to undervolt so it doesnt do more than 320

It’s impossible for it to draw 235w at peak. It’s either limited somehow or throttling somehow or seriously undervolted. I have 3 profiles for my 3080ti, first being default factory settings which draw 350w, second if undervolted and a tad oc-ed which draws around 300. And third is for less demanding games, where i limit power to 60% and i get 240w. It’s true that 3080 does draw 30w less power than 3080ti on average though.

MSFS in the Xbox X is hot ■■■■. Will be for years (i guess). If you aint deep in crazy mods, maybe thats a possibility  ?

I have the Zotac card - I guess it is not overpowered, just a regular one.

Update!

I went "go big or go home" I upgraded to a 5800x3d, b550 and 32gb ram. Did a small test over Manhattan with the fenix a320. And I had on high setting (1440p) around 40 fps with weather preset rain/overcast. I think thats is quite good?

Hello there,

I’m currently running a i7-8700k at 5GHz paired with 32 GB RAM at 3200 MHz and a RTX3080 and I’m mostly CPU limited with my 3440x1440 resolution.
Also thinking about upgrading because I drop to 28 frames or even less at high density airports with VATSIM traffic.

Is the 5800X3D still king for MSFS? Was wondering about the expected performance boost, as Userbenchmark only indicates a minor improvement of 14%.
Any one with similar rig who upgradet or is thinking about it?
Input and thoughts highly appreciated

Just updated from a 5900x to a 13900kf.

While the 5800x3D is still very good, it’s based on an “old architecture”. If you pair the 13900kf with DDR5, and all the rest, you have an advantage. Not a lot, anyway, but we’re speaking of excellence vs excellence.

Maybe if you want you can just wait February for the next x3D to come out. But this, of course, will imply changing everything.

Hi guys
I have a question
I run the game on 2160p but when i decide to activate DLSS ON Performance Mode, devmode shows me that the resolution is downscaled to 1080p so great because more FPS BUT!
What about importance of CPU/GPU for thise case? Native 2160p so GPU very importante BUT downscale turn resolution to 1080p > performance switch on CPU performance ?
It’s important to me to know that, because i think to replace my 3080RTX + 5600x for a 3090Ti + 5850x3d… I run the sim with x3 TV on 4k resolution…
Thanks for your advices

From what I’ve seen mentioned on here most use 1440p on the flanks and I’m actually surprised NVCP lets you have 3x 4k monitors attached to a 3080 at full resolution, I always thought that adds up to more than the card’s pixel limit. My best advice is to swat up on the 3090’s specs but I know that they can render 8k.

Ok thanks for feedback. I can confirm that the game allows me x3 tv 4K resolution since SU11 and DLSS before i used Nvidia surround and it was a nightmare 4fps… it’s better now so the 3090ti associated with 5800x3d will be fine
