Thoughts on this spec?

I used to have a 5900x (along with a RX 6800) and considered upgrading to a 5800x3d. I ended up going with an AM5 based system with a 7900x3d and I’m very happy I did. The 5900x processor is a very good one - I would recommend to overclock it and upgrade your gpu in the short term and then upgrade to AM5. Your new gpu will carry over nicely to your AM5 system so there is nothing lost/thrown away.

Since the 5900x has a higher clock & boost rate over the 5800x3d you’re really taking 1 step backward to go 2 steps forward with the extra vcache. Therefore the net gain is not going to be significant and you’ll eventually throw that processor away.

Thanks! Appreciate your input.

That indeed would make more sense, going to AM5.
This is definitely the plan someday.

Undervolting my cpu is what I am thinking of, since I am having temps ranging between 70-80C.
This was with SU14.
I don’t know what my temperatures will be with SU15. I have to wait, since I am on a vacation now😅

My 5900x undervolted nicely and I was able to reduce heat. I only increased the boost via PBO by .75GHz which allowed the cpu to boost longer and at a higher clock rate over stock with the reduced temps using an air cooler!

I next purchased an RX 7900XTX (and PS) which paired well with the 5900x albeit the sim was then cpu limited. Eventually I upgraded to AM5 with the 7900x3d and I can hit ~250fps with AFMF (4k HDR) at attitude over non-dense terrain/cities. The sim runs wonderfully and SU15 is the icing on the cake!

Thank you all so much for the feedback and guidance. It’s all a bit more murky and complicated than I thought but I think I will wait this year out a bit as many of you have suggested.

For info, my current rig is a lowly Ryzen 5 5600 with 16 GB ram (DDR4 3200) and an nvidia 1660 Super.

Very nice! Is the 5900X limiting you at the busy airports too? With a decent amount of traffic (but nothing crazy), I go down to about 20 fps at very large airports, like LAX. But even at smaller ones like Cape Town Intl., or Halifax Stanfield (FSimStudio version) I get around 30, but with lots of stutters.

Once airborne, I reach hit my FPS limiter of 40 FPS with lots of headroom left.

Yeah, that’s a prudent advice.

Yes indeed. Thats why I try to avoid larger airports, unfortunately.

I really hope SU15 will solve a few issues, I have yet to try and if not, maybe MSFS2024 will.

Hopefully.

Hello

Here is a parts list reflecting your choices. If you are in the United States total is about $1160.30 according to the following tool:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QcFrjH

Below is an attempt at providing an alternate configuration.
This is meant as food for thought and can be tweaked further to reflect brand/budget preferences.

I switched to a newer AMD processor on the AM5 platform. As was previously mentioned, AM4 CPUs have been good, but they are at the end of their lifecycle. Choosing a current platform will enable you to upgrade your PC at a much lower cost in the future. You pay a little more now, but you will pay much less later.

The suggested motherboard is mid range, but with very solid, future proof characteristics.

The storage amount was doubled. I would say this is a must, 1TB may prove to be insufficient for MSFS plus all the addons that we accumulate when using the sim.

Memory amount is the same, but it uses DDR5 instead of DDR4.

Suggested graphics card has 16GB VRAM instead of 12 GB. It has roughly the same price tag, but it’s not an Nvidia. It should be more powerful, even in Ray Tracing, but it does not have the Nvidia specific stuff.

At this moment, the total price is about 1413 USD so 250 dollars more using PCPartpicker data for the United States.
I think it is worth the higher price tag, as it is much more powerful and future proof.
If you are not in the US, the difference in pricing may be steeper though.

if need be, you can change the country using the menu at the top right of the screen, where it says United States.

Hope it helps.
