My threads seem to be used a lot.
Program Load - light thread use
Looks like Asobo changed the programming as the
program loads.
Flight Load - all threads pretty busy
While flying - lots of thread use
Well, here is what I see for the CPU Usage flying low and fast in a TBM.
I have to show the smaller renditions of the CPU so that I could get all the logical threads on the screen.
UPDATE: Obviously, I did not get all threads on the screen shot but all were about the same as shown, Total threads is: 16. Threads numbered 0 - 15.
None are pegged at 100% and all seem to be doing work but certainly not being tasked at 100%.
In any case , all seems to be riunning smoothly and we are looking forward to the next fiasco, oops…meant update release. Smile.
See Attached Screen Shot.
Maybe my CPU running hot
But i can’t see i have high temps and my main thread would have been the same?
I have hyperthreading off so I only run 8 physical cores
I have laundry to fold so I’m going to be afk a bit but when I return I’ll do a comparison screen for you … If I can remember to screen cap it and not hit F12 and be dismayed task manager isn’t on there lol oops
The thing is when i’m not cpu limited i can increase resolution without loss in FPS. I think it’s better to have less load on the cpu than the GPU to have it running more smooth. The problem is that i need to turn off both traffic options and photogrammetry to achieve that.
Is it possiblle that low frame rates at large airports are limited in some way by servers? I have seen low frame rates with cpu and gpu load margins. I also get the impression that the rates may have large fluctuations over time but have not yet proven that.
I really hope that the SU10 with DX12 really relieves the CPU massively. If you implement it correctly, then it should be. When it comes to coding, it really comes down to performance and algorithms. Very light codes can result in inefficient runtimes.
Even though MSFS is a complex game, new bugs shouldn’t appear after every SU. Maybe you have to be more careful when merging the codes if several people are working on one code or the structure has to be made more efficient. I hope that in the future we will experience performance gains with SU rather than performance losses.
I wish the development team every success with this.
I tried to get a new screen shot flying in same area, same aircraft and with all 16 threads.
Lets see if they show up here… Flying in same TBM, low and fast. All threads showing.
I believe my original point was showing someone that said the MSFS was CPU Dependent.
I appears to me that this screen shot depicts no stress at all on the CPU while running on a very medicore system. What stands out to me is the relaxed use of the CPU in a Photogrammetry city, multiuser on, live weather on and still running a fluid display with a very mid to low end system.
In the end, it does not matter what I am running, what matters, is the display fluid with no stutters.
So far so good here…
Maybe the sim is optimised for your CPU
What settings are you using? I would like to try same on my end
I would like to know what setting causes the high load on mainthread. I know traffic, t-lod and photogrammetry is heavy on mainthread. Maybe there is more?
In the Sim, I have everything set to HIGH except clouds to Ultra. LOD, I think was 150.
Not running any traffic (Planes, Cars or Boats) but have tried and it didn’t make much if any difference.
…
Running a AMD Ryzen 7 3800x running at 3.9 GHz, 32 GB Mem, Nothing special, Low end system but with these settings, the sim seems stable and fluid.
..
I was just interested in this thread because I had a low end system that runs pretty fluid with MSFS and someone had mentioned that the CPU was really being tasked hard in the sim. Mine didn’t seem to be struggling at all.
I have now my sim running almost 50 FPS stable on ground at KLAX with t-lod 200 4K renderscaling 60
Could decrease res to achieve 60FPS i think but i want it to render in 4k
ULTRA preset
Photogrammetry off
All traffic options off/0
My system:
RTX 2080 Super
I10900
32GB
Will check how well it perform in PMDG 737
EDIT:
PMDG 737 same settings
oh, I have Photogrammetry ON becasue I was lucky enough to live in a photogrammetry city (Pensacola, FL, KPNS) and it looks really good and all correct. EXCEPT of course for my main peeve of MISSING BRIDGE SPANS since release…smile…
OK here’s why the voodoo I do is done … only setting changed hyperthreading …
First default, many sleepy core, one very angry core, he misses his half self
Union busted, hyperthreading off, still one angry core but he is stronger and his fellow public works guys are using the shovels not leaning on them and 3 FPS
Special guest stars, MadDog Md-82 , FlyTampa Toronto Pearson , Simple Traffic and REX AccuSeason
This is how the CPU load looks like for me:
My settings:
Graphics Preset: Ultra
Motion Blur Off
Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate: Medium
V-Sync: 30 FpS
Aircraft Traffic Type: Real-Time-Online
Airport Life & Land and Sea Traffic: all 25
Online Functionality: On
Bing Data World Graphics: On
Photogrammetry: Off
Live Real-World Air Traffic: On
Live Weather: On
Multiplayer: Off
The 30 FpS are pleasantly fluid and my computer has enough reserves without heating up too much (very pleasant now in summer).
…
now the same settings, only with V-Sync: 60 FpS. I only achieve 57 FpS, the main thread is fully loaded and the GPU still has reserves. So my bottleneck is the CPU. Now of course I could reduce CPU-heavy settings, but I’m happy the way it’s set. No addons, everything runs nice and smooth and I have no CTDs. So I fly contentedly with 30 FpS and a cool rig into the summer ;-).

Windows 11 Pro 21H2 (Up to date) installed on Samsung SSD 840 PRO (GPT)
2 x SSD ADATA XPG Gammix S11 Pro 2 TB M2 (for games)
GIGABYTE B550 Gaming X V2
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with Be Quiet Dark Rock Slim Air tower CPU cooler
RAM: 64GB RAM G.Skill DIMM 32 GB DDR4-3200

I would suggest some better airflow for your GPU over 90c is quite toasty and you may want to use that power to maybe cook an egg!
Edit: Or a roast and potatoes
