TIN Jargon

What does TIN mean please ?

Triangular irregular networks (TIN) have been used by the GIS (geographic information system) community for many years and are a digital means to represent surface morphology.

What does GIS mean please? I love acronym questions are answered with an acronym!

I updated my post above:
GIS - geographic information system

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface.

So why was the Canada update described as ‘TIN cities’ when all (as far as I’m aware) previous world updates used the much more familiar and widely understood term ‘photogrammetry cities’?

Is there actually anything different in the process used for WU11?

Lots of great info here too pertaining specifically to how it relates to Flight Simulator

Because a developer wrote the text instead of a “normal” person

I assume their regular copywriter was on vacation for a month or two or something

The changelogs actually mentioned „TIN“ in the past already, at least once.

And yes, it was also confusing back then  It is hard to explain to people what „photogrammetry“ means („No, it‘s not AI based voodoo magic! It‘s objects taken photos of from different angles and those are miraculously stitched together
and no, fine-granular objects are not suitable for this process, unfortunately
“), and throwing in yet another TLA doesn‘t help really

Totally Inaccurate Nonsense?

It’s okay, I take my hat and find the door myself :stuck_out_tongue:

And the desperately required disclaimer: It was a joke ^^

Anyway
Way too many abbreviations, unfortunately. CFD, NPS, TIN, GIS
 WTH?

HS!

I’m not sure what the fact that TIN has been used previously has anything to do with anything. Yes, it has been used before, usually in a development context without explanation of what they were even talking about unfortunately.

Either way, there’s no excuse for using the term TIN Cities in a marketing document, when they have always been called photogrammetry. Cardinal rule of marketing
NEVER use acronyms, unless it’s a household word like NASA or FAA.

It has to do with the fact that we had the exact same discussion about „what does TIN mean?“ and „Why not use the term photogrammetry instead“ already in the past and was in reply to your previous „the person normally writing the changelog must have been on holidays“ remark. Well, wasn‘t that obvious
otherwise just take it as a FYI

Personally I don‘t mind the term TIN too much (now that I know what it means from previous discussions), but agree that using „photogrammetry“ would be more consistent in using a more established term.
