A fix for the Tobii Eye Tracker issue - not being able to adjust axes in Controls - is still not there despite it being on a list to be fixed in SU2.
What is happening?
While you are waiting you could take a look at Opentrack. It works very well with the Tobii.
I second the use of Open Track with the Tobii Eye Tracker. Perfect for me.
While the lack of a functional menu for Tobii Eye is shameful in the context of an announced partnership and Tobii eye calibration menu working perfectly fine in FS2020, I need to thank MS/Asobo for doing such a blunder. I would never have tried OpenTrack otherwise, which is a far superior alternative.
In fact, unless they do a proper proper implementation, Iâd actually just deactivate that whole calibration menu and just direct people to OpenTrack. The experience is simply superior.
I just copied this guyâs setup and works perfectly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52UdJIyJY0Y
Sorry guys, I disagree. Opentrack works ok, but is nothing like as good as the integrated Tobii support in MSGS 2024.
Itâs just a pity that we have to edit the xml file to make changes because of the non functioning Controls aspect that Asobo said they would fix in SU2.
Agree with you completely on this.
The integrated controls in the older sim are very good. The XML fie edit makes the tracker work well in 2024, but itâs very clunky and slow to make small adjustments compared to how it worked in 2020.
Opentrack can make it work and give you adjustments on the fly but itâs an unnecessary extra bit of software, and the results are nowhere near as smooth as you get with the native tobii controls in 2020, or with the XML file edit in 2024.
That was certainly not my experience. What I found is the native software would cause my viewpoint to radically shift at really awkward moments like when on final. It would rapidly zoom in or out, for example. All of that is gone with Opentrack. It has so many options you can tweak:
Response curves for X,Y,Z
Response curves for rotation
Default position for X,Y,Z plus rotation
Choice of filters, which was the killer but for me, and these can also be tweaked
Hot keys for many Opentrack functions such as stop/start of tracking, reset âhomeâ position
Profiles for different configurations.
I think my only improvement would be to auto switch profiles in the same way that SPAD does, which is another excellent external tool I would fly without.
Thatâs odd behaviour from the tobii, I havenât had that happen in use, but the rapid zooming in and out happens if I get up and move away from the PC & sit back down, or if someone walks past behind me. Are you at or near the distance limit of the tobii maybe?
Also, Iâm not remotely opining that Opentrack is bad - being able to tweak all the curves in the fine detail available is excellent, and it worked well for me using a phone or web cam - but I find that the tobii is smoother.
Agree with your sentiment OP. Tobii has a âGame Hubâ application that got bored of waiting for Asobo and they now allow you to adjust your settings in there for the sim. Works really well as a workaround in the meantime.
Iâve mentioned this before. I think it gets confused by my beard, which is probably a foot long now.
Sometimes I think it sees it as part of my face, so therefore a larger face so it must be nearer, so my view zooms in. Other times it doesnât see it, and then zooms back to normal.
The Opentrack software seems to do a much better job of ignoring it, and I donât get that behaviour anymore. I tried all sorts of things to avoid this, like tucking it in to my shirt, wearing a mask over it so a chin hammock of sorts, and even tying it up into a Viking like narrow tail. All worked, but none of them were comfortable long term.
The other thing Opentrack does is allow you to invert the direction you are leaning when you are looking behind you. By default if you turned your head to the right so you were facing backwards, you would find you had to lean the opposite way to what you wanted. Opentrack has a setting to avoid that.
It also has a neck displacement option. Say you turn to the right, this will cause you view to shift as if you are leaning to the right as your eyes really are now further to the right as they are at the front of you head. This allows you to apply a value to stop that, and for me -6cm seems to work well for me.
Umm, I think weâre going to need a picture of that beard to really understand what youâre sayingâŠ
Yes, I am the fourth ZZTop.
Yep, GH changes donât work âon the flyâ, but only require a flight restart to take effect.
The integrated performance is exceptionally good, IMO. I have used OpenTrack in DCS (and other games) for years, but it is relatively unstable and unreliable compared to the integrated MSFS. Also, I use a little eye tracking which you canât get in OT.
I think you posted a guide on those settings after 24 had launched and us tobii users were getting a bit panicked that it didnât work as with 2020. It mentioned the settings for leaning looking around, and after following it & making some small adjustments I found that was the best Iâd ever had Opentrack working.
For me though, and with my PC & screen in my room etc., I find the tobii on its own is smoother and more natural. Then again, I donât sport the classic Billy & Dusty look & canât stand the itching!
It sounds like you have made every reasonable effort to get it working but the subject intrigued me here on saturday morning so I had a quick search and there are quite a few r/ users reporting beard & face tracking issues, albeit not just with the T5.
Have you tried contacting tobii, to see if they have come across the issue before and if they can offer any advice? They started in Sweden, so youâd think they should have some experience with the viking look!
For me, on FS2020 the view was always a bit wobbly, since my head doesnât stay still. Made it difficult to keep head tracking ON while configuring the cockpit of an airliner. GA flights, it worked fine, ofc. . But with OpenTrack , wherever i look, it keeps the camera in place, and I appreciate that, so I can move the mouse, click buttons, etc. . I also appreciate the on-the-fly changes without needing to restart the game or go in some menus, etc. and I really like that I can configure asymmetrical curves, e.g. looking down , I can make the curve more aggressive so I only need to look a bit down, while looking up i can do a more deliberate, full motion.
Interesting. My experience was the total opposite of that and I have been using OT in other games for years.
My biggest issue is that the âreset eye trackingâ binding - Where it doesnât always put it back to the âcentreâ view but off on an angle. I havenât yet found a way to fix that.
Unless the only solution for now is to switch to the OpenTrack method if that doesnât have the same issue?
I use the OpenTrack method myself. It seems to work okay.
I donât have that issue, so itâs obviously not a universal one.
I was doing some test flights yesterday, and disabled Tobii tracking. I did notice that it had reverted as expected. Iâll just overwrite the XML with my saved file, since itâs âdialed in.â
