Two weeks on PC Link -Failure!

I’m impressed with Flt Sim, I flew light aircraft for years. The VR is astonishing, just cruised around Venice at about 30ft more or less on the stall at 40Kts - brilliant!. Stalling and spinning is just like the real thing (minus the G force).

BUT !!! I 'm almost driven to insanity by the Oculus link. Sometimes it is flawless, but more often it refuses to link, saying my computer is not ready - this despite Oculus saying I’m linked.
I’ve updated, USB 3, Bios, and everything else…please can anyone help a suicidal pilot…

IMO has to do more with flakey USB 3.0 connection with the cable. PC is fooled half the time with unreliable stability on the link speed. Hence why I switch to virtual desktop and never looked back.
Got a $80 official LINK cable collecting dust right now.

Thanks for that, you are probably right. My internet is 30 Meg - would that do virtual desktop VR?

It doesn’t care about your internet connection, only how good your router/wifi AP is.

Virtual desktop streams between your PC and the headset. So experience and quality would depend how fast and stable is your wifi .

I don’t know where to turn. Yesterday I finally flew all over in VR with several aircraft, suddenly today when I select Oculus link in headset it says “your computer is not ready” and in Flight Sim it says “no headset detected” when I go to VR. This despite Oculus saying I’m connected and showing green.
I’ve tried all the disconnect, re-connect etc no luck. Has something in Flight Sim or other software setting changed?

I tend to be in agreement that it’s either a bad cable or USB 3 connection. I’ve got the Quest 2 and haven’t had any problems with either my computer or headset recognizing one another. I paid all of $19.00 for my cable thru Amazon and haven’t had any problems with it. I’m in total agreement that VR is fantastic. It’s been weeks since I’ve flown in 2d with the monitor. I’m in the states but am really looking forward to tomorrow’s update and exploring the UK.

My official link cable was faulty, it couldn’t handle a stable connection. I returned it to my seller, got a refund and replaced it with a cheaper USB-A to USB-C cable with 2 Gb/s. It works fine now…
However, I do not use link anymore with MSFS, I prefer virtual desktop, it seems a little weird because it streams on wifi with two more pieces of software but I get much better results than with links even if I am not able to use 5Ghz wifi (Quest 2 disconnects from my 5Ghz wifi every 10 minutes, problem is solved by using a slower 2.4 Ghz connection) .
I don’t understand why wifi playing is not the main option for Quest 2 and PC apps.

Thanks for those replies. I begin to suspect my cable, it came from Amazon. It says on the packet “For Oculus Link, USB 3.2”.
I think I’ll send it back. After VR 2d is very second best!

What I’ve found is that the USB C port on my Asus X570 motherboard is quite tempermental, and the link cable never feels that secure connected to it. Given the weight of the link cable as well, i’ve had a few occasions where just shifting the cable about has killed the connection and i’ve had to reseat it. My initial workaround was to fit a clamp to the cable and then attach the clamp to the back of my pc case which stopped the connector moving full stop. Since then I just bought a USB A to USB C adapter and touch wood it’s been fine.

What channel is your 5GHZ wifi on. If it is on the low end try changing to the higher channel. Also make sure the bandwidth is 40mhz wide and not 20. Will make a difference in wifi speed.

My router is set to Auto channel with 40 Mhz bandwidth. When I use VD with the Quest 2 and my 5Ghz router, I get constant 866 Mps for exactly ten minutes and then something happens on Quest side that makes it look for another connection for a few seconds and then it reconnects to 5 Ghz. It seems to be a well known issue of Quest 2 on some 5 Ghz routers with European Wifi 5-AC 5 Ghz standards, there is plenty of messages on Oculus forum about that, it is solved by switching to a Wifi 6 router (I made the test but I do not own one). I sent ticket to Oculus and never got an answer from them.

You may want to hard set the wifi channel to say 157 with a 40mhz bandwidth. Perhaps your router is moving the channels around searching for a better channel.
With wifi6 expect around 1200 mbs wifi connection to VD.

I did test all possible channels with 20Mhz, 40Mhz or 80 Mhz bandwidth, my issue is still a disconnection from Quest 2 after exactly 10 minutes. It only disconnect for a few seconds, I can fly with 5 Ghz and hit pause when the disconnection happen. but right now, I prefer the poor 2.4 Ghz which still gives me a better experience than link.

When is the last time you checked for any updated firmware for your router? Perhaps if there is an update it could fix random wifi issues on the 5Ghz band.

This has started to happen in the past week for me as well. As much as I like MSFS 2020 in VR with VFR “when it works” it has driven me to almost give up. I went and bought Aerofly FS 2 and VR is just exquisite!
I can’t even attempt MSFS 2020 in VR for the past 24 hours as the London update of 21GB is taking so long to download? Yet I can download 200 GBs in 4 hours anywhere else…

I’ve discovered that being closer to the router where WiFi is sent out and not anywhere near my PC speeds things up tremendously. Youtube 360 becomes clear and no stutter, games don’t lag. But would have to move my PC and mouse closer to it as well,to be able to push CNTRL+TAB and move mouse.

For the possible benefit of those with Headset not found problems.
I solved mine - it was entirely due to my stupidity - while changing the single line instruction in Oculus debug I had used a ‘dash’ instead of an ‘underscore dash’ at one point. After fixing my headset is found and connects no problem every time!
I also found that setting ‘rendering resolution’ in Oculus graphics setup to .8 boosts VR performance better than any setting in the simulator.
Oculus refuses to let me change frequency above 72Hz as it says my connection is only USB 2 - this despite the fact I am using USB 3.1 and an approved cable.
I can use more or less max settings in PC mode with excellent results, in VR things are less sharp but perfectly playable even though my setup is not very high.
Intel i7 4790 3.6 GHz Nvidia 2060 super and only 16 GB Ram (annoyingly my motherboard won’t take any more Ram.

Updating the firmware might be a solution, but it’s a French router (just the brand, it’s made in China and looks like a D-link AC1200 2.4/5Ghz), I can’t find any update for this router though I know how to update the firmware if I had a new one…

Lately the Link is always disconnecting,So I found a second had dual band router, plugged into our 2.4 Ghz and now have 5Ghz signal.
For the first time I could run MSFS without the link cable, even with low 35 MBps download speed.
I had to change the openXR to steam (even though I have MS store version) After steam loading its VR home like there was an earthquake finally settled down and I ran the flight sim in VR better than ever-it was amazing! No stuttering, clear and smooth.
I have no idea why wirelessly running the game is better but it is!
Only problem is if I want to run it with the link cable it means the hassle of putting OculusXR back in the registry.
