Unable To Reinstall MSFS 2020 From XBox App

I had to unistall my previous installation of MSFS 2020 due to it crashing during updates. When I went back to the Xbox app to reinstall it, there was no option to install it back. Whn I went to the game’s page, I had a button to subscribe, buy (which was disabled), add to play later, and the box with the three dots in it (where the option to unistall was found earlier and which I feel the install option would be to reinstall it). There is a message … “We weren’t able to load all options. Close the app, then try again.”

I have rebooted my computer, uninstall and reinstalled both the xbox and gaming services apps.

Have I lost access to MSFS? Or could this be related to the Azure issue that had been reported on this website that started today (I no longer see that message)? Maybe I should just be patient?

Try installing from the MS Store.

Check this, currently there are a lot of things in red

THanks folks for your suggestions. I was finally able to update overnight, but I’m now back again to the original issue I had that led me to uninstall/reinstall in the first place. Oddly, th enew installation of MSFS was to resume the update from the original installation, which crashes during the update and never finishes. I felt that a full new install would eliminate the previous installation’s world update and start fresh, but I guess not.

Now, I guess back to the Google library to find out why it’s crashing on update and what to do to fix it.

I’ve had MSFS since it came out, and actually have never flown a complete flight as I’ve been so consumed with errors, tweaking, and configuring that it’s become more a chore than entertainment. I know now why I took a break.

Do you have any addons?
If so, try with the community folder empty.

There is this troubleshooting checklist which could help as well:

This could also be the result of a cloud save issue which may need to be deleted to cure.

These articles are located in the Sim Support tab at the top of the forum page.
If these don’t help, or you would like to see other options, there are more troubleshooting articles in that site.

Edit: I am realizing that it is not crashing during an update, it’s actually crashing during loading. MSFS is updated, but crashes during application initialization. It did manage to initiatize once, but not again since.

Thanks @TheSevenflyer . I’m getting beyond frustrated at this point. I’m not sure if I should start a new support post, or continue this.

The troubleshooting checklist netted no positive results. Both Game Store and XBox apps are up to date, Microsoft accounts jive across the board between all apps, Windows 11 is up to date as is my graphics drivers. I have about 455GB free space on the SSD that MSFS is installed on. It doesn’t appear as though I have the Gaming Services Repair tool in the XBox app recommended in the troubleshooting checklist. The computer has been restarted numerous times, with each reinstallation.

I have uninstalled twice now via the XBox app, making sure that the “Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe” folder is removed from the c:/Users/UserName/AppData/Local/Packages. Since my installation is to D:\MSFD, I made sure it was uninstalled from there, as well as Community and Official folders I directed to be saved to as well. I was having the same problem when I used the default MSFS target of C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages, so I opted to customize the Packages destination. Both uninstalls seem to have been thorough.

On both occassions I have managed to reinstall MSFS to d:/MSFS via the XBox app. It installs over the 4 or so hours to version 1.39.9.0. The Community folder in d:/msfs/ is empty, and the Official>OneStore forder in D:/msfs appears to be populated with the game files. There is nothing tn the same folders created in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages, so the application knows where the files are supposed to be directed. I do not use the Nvidia App as many with similar experiences resolved by removing it.

I restart the PC, and launch MSFS 2020 from the desktop icon. It opens, checks for updates, and proceeds to update. It crashes (closes the app, no messages) at about 50% of the Japan World Update. Each subsequent attempt of launching MSFS trys to resume the update from the point it last crashed, never from the start. I always know the update is going to fail as their is a suble “bonk” soundjust before the window disappears.

As far as the cloud save issue goes, following the direction in the link provided, I don’t have any cloud saves to delete.

Seems I may have come across a possible solution. Seems to be a common issue stemming from Nvidia dlls. Removing or renaming said dlls resolved the crashing for me, although I’m worried what this will do down the road when those dlls are needed.

Reddit Post

Changing the name or deleting the files won’t help, as they will reappear after the NVIDIA driver update, which will cause CTDs when loading MSFS 2020. I’ve posted the workaround on the forum multiple times: switching from DX11 to DX12. I’ll write it again, nothing bad will happen.

As I’ve already mentioned, the workaround is switching from DX11 to DX12.
To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

Launch MSFS 2020

Thank you so much @TenPatrol, I appreciate you sharing this solution again.

I had only renamed the files as I was right in my assumption that I would regret removing them if I did. It didn’t take long before I brought them back to their original state. I did install the Nvidia App, which once installed and the files returned to normal, eliminated the CTD issue I was having. So far, things have been running smoothly with DLSS 4 and DX12. If it’s frowned upon to have Nvidia app, I may remove it and apply your solution.

If you applied the optimization option for MSFS in the NVIDIA app, it automatically changed the setting from DX11 to DX12.
