Unable to run with clear screen resolution

I don’t even know where to begin here, so many rabbit holes I’ve gone down.

First off, my system:

Intel Core i9-10900KF 3.70Ghz
32GB (2 DIMM 16GB, 2933, 2R, 8, DR4, NU, XMP)
GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB
3-27” monitors as main window
4-10” monitors for pop-out avionics

For a long time I was running this fine with an RTX 2080S GPU. Then something changed and I couldn’t run those pop-outs unless I changed my main monitor resolution in the sim from 7680x1440 to 4098x768. At this lower screen resolution everything is grainy but flying is smooth and FPS is fine.

After a while I upgraded my GPU to the 4070 and was able to switch back to a resolution of 7680x1440. Working great for about 8 months or so until about two weeks ago.

No harware or setting change and I suddenly am getting major stuttering, especially on approach and taxiing. Bad enough to have to kill the process.

Have gone down all these rabbit holes now making all sorts of changes and getting even more problems. This morning it was a CTD every time I popped out a panel to a smaller monitor. Just a mess of big issues.

I went back to reducing the main screen resolution to 4098x768 and things seem to be running fine but I shouldn’t have to have this degraded image and horrible resolution with the gear I have.

Not even sure where to begin. I read so many articles saying “use DX-11” or “don’t use DX-11”. “V-synch on” or “V-synch off”. Etc.

Some of my settings now are:

NVIDIA DLSS SUPER RESOLUTION
BALANCED
10
V-SYNC ON
LOW LATENCY ON
FRAME RATE 100%
DX11

With the screen resolution set lower it isn’t horrible and I mostly fly the Longitude so I’m at 45,000 feet looking at clouds. But the parts of the cockpit that I look at with my main monitors are not sharp as they would be at 1440.

I just want to be able to get back to the 1440!

Moved to User Support Hub for community assistance.

I’d start by switching to Dx12 and see what happens with Frame Generation enabled.

One thing I’m really not great at is making one change at a time. I don’t know what I did but I’m now running beautifully and with the screen resolution that I wanted.

I used to use GEForce to monitor FPS but for the first time ever I turned on Dev Mode and am tracking that way.

My frame rate is 26-29 which sounds low but everything is very smooth.

Using about 16GB of memory and 5.2GB of GPU memory.

I am however hearing a fan in the case running that I hadn’t heard before.

That’s great! I would highly recommend to take a pic of your sim settings with your phone so you can get back to this smooth baseline.

Most likely from your new 4070 working hard as it should. You can always use a monitoring tool such as HWiNFO64 to confirm which fan is reving up.

When it comes to troubleshooting, this is bad advise. Let’s assume frame generation worked in this case. Well we know he was running fine without it before on lower spec hardware, which means all FG is doing is covering up a problem that still exists. The goal should be to diagnose the root cause of the problem first, fix that, then use things like FG if the user wishes as an option.

Though, it sounds like whatever was going on was fixed.
