Unofficial Guide to Conversion of Liveries for MSFS 2024 (2020 legacy aircraft only)

Sorry I missed this reply - I’ll have a look at that to see if it’s possible.

Great!!! (and best of luck!). I suspect you’d have to pre-create a few settings files (for different size aircraft), then have the batch file select one when run. How you’d select the actual aircraft/livery … goodness knows LOL!

Talking of batch files … I found a handy tool:

It can be used as a batch converter, so potentially a lot quicker than using Paint dot Net.
Gives bigger file sizes (when compression set to OFF), but they seem to be better dithered than Paint dot Net … and they’re only a step towards KTX2 textures creation anyway, so file sizes maybe not important.

Hi Creators,

I assume, I’m not the only one who spent countless hours to learn blender and to create a workflow for generating liveries for MSFS 2022. Now with MSFS 2024, I hit the concrete wall again. There are virtual no tutorials online for livery creation in MSFS 2024, at least I found none. Has anyone been able to convert the cessna longitude, cessna grand caravan or the Kingair 350 liveries to the 2024 version of the simulator?

Happy and Healthy New Year :four_leaf_clover:!

You are not alone! It is a whole new system now that we will have to learn from scratch. Some people are making inroads but it looks like a bit of a complication! Beyond my level of understanding.

I followed your steps and got the same livery working eventually, however ive just started flightsim up and now the plane is white, is it still working for you?

Hi Flak99, I’m trying to convert a cj4 livery png files to ktx2. I don’t seem to be getting a splash screen, though it does bring FS2024 to the foreground. The System32 cmd seems to be stuck on Step 2 of 3.
FS2024 is the Steam version and I have the version of MSFS 2024 SDK installed.

Hi there - are you trying to generate the KTX2 files while MSFS 2024 is running? If so, I think that won’t work (but to be honest I didn’t try it) - please try without MSFS 2024 running if that was indeed the case.

I tried with and without fs running. I ended up trying a earlier version, which eventually started working. I then retried the latest version, and that also started working. So it may have been down to a bad png file.
Now all I need to do is learn how to do the new livery file structure LoL!

Also a huge thank you for making png conversions much easier

Hi,

I’m struggling here too.
Basically I converted the DDS textures to PNG, and then with your script I got the KTX2 textures and json files.

But they do not work yet.
Am I missing some extra steps?
I am trying to add a livery to a third-party aircraft, could this be the reason?
Thanks in advance!

Hi! How to obtain a copy of the “MSFS 2024 livery makers guide”
Below the link ,it say that is private, and trying to access the file say that not exists.

Tnaks

Sorry, the author removed it over a dispute with Microsoft discord moderators. I’ll remove the link since it is no longer available.

I’ve been messing with how liveries work in 2024. for the livery to appear under the liveries section two things need to be set. i’m using the flythemaddog md-82 as an example. the folder needs to be aircraftname-livery-yourtexthere (see image)

image.png.c86d76001265c347b721604a5ba33db5.png

and the ui.createdby section in the aircraft.cfg of the livery needs to match the main aircraft so for the md-82 it needs to be set to “LSH”. the other thing is the file system in MSFS 2024 is very sensitive so I also re generate the layout.json file to try and avoid issues if you follow these steps you should have all of the liveries working and listed under livery with no additional aircraft or variants.

Hope this helps.

So I want to convert an Livery from the iniBuilds a320neo (Msfs2020) to the new file system of the Msfs2024 for the inibuilds a320neo
Inibuilds A320 Neo - Eurowings Fleet [8K] for Microsoft Flight Simulator | MSFS
Do I have to do it all from scratch or can I just convert the files?

Note: It’s the same aircraft but a different file system due to the changes of MSFS2024

Hi there, so it turned out that my ImageToMSFSKTX2 batch file wasn’t working with the Steam version of MSFS 2024. I’ve rewritten a big chunk of it to offer a user-option, to specify whether you are using Microsoft Store or Steam version. Although I’m not able to test the Steam version myself, I think it should (hopefully!) solve the problem for Steam users!

If anyone can confirm that would be great. Check out v0.9 or later of my batch file

I hope it’s OK to keep posting about updates to my script here. Mods feel free to direct me to a better spot if you want!
As always, let me know if you run into issues or have some ideas for further enhancements!

Recent changelogs are:

v0.10

You can now output the KTX2 files directly to an existing aircraft livery folder and then have it automatically run MSFSLayoutgenerator.exe so you are good to use the livery immediately in the sim - no more copying files around!

v0.11

  • Added support for TIF images in ALBD, COMP and NORM texture types.

  • Fixed a bug with path names in Option 4 (saving to Output folder).

v0.12

  • When using option 5 to update an existing aircraft livery and layout.json, the script will detect whether that livery is either MSFS 2024 Modular or MSFS 2024 non-Modular, and adapt accordingly to ensure the layout.json is updated.

  • Added error handling to detect very long paths which will result in path+filename of textures greater than 260 characters; these would otherwise cause a failure . A warning will alert the user.

  • Added various formatting improvements.

Thank you for this awesome detailed guide!

At first I just wanted the white box to go away from this set of liveries for the DHC-2 (DHC-2 Beaver Metal Base Frontier Livery Pack (w/ dynamic reg)). I was successful, but then I had no tail number at all.

By downloading your sample livery for the DHC-4, I was able to get the dynamic registration to work in 2024 like it does in 2020. :+1:

I spent way too many hours trying every which way to get the 2020 livery to work in 2024, but it was your guide that got me over the hump.

Cheers!

Hi Tom,
I have the exact same problem as you. Even wrote to the maker of the Icelandair Vatnajkull but he replied that he doesn’t have FS2024 and wouldn’t know how to do it. I tried to convert it with the livery converter you can find on flightsim.to, but it just messes up the whole thing with patches of color and even the frame lines visible (I guess it’s the DDS to KTX2 conversion that doesn’t work or maybe the sizes that don’t match). Have you been able to solve your problem?
