Upcoming EGNX by Pyreegue

At no point have I blamed anybody, least of all Pyreegue, I merely corrected a factually incorrect statement.

FWIW after 18 months of black screen and CTD painn on series X, I switched to a PC with lots of RAM and VRAM, and I’ve never had black screens and almost no CTD since then. So it’s pretty clear where I think the fault lies and I voted with my wallet on that one.

They are on Xbox. High-fidelity aircraft and detailed airports together sap the Xbox’s VRAM pretty quickly.

“The Xbox can’t handle MSFS” is a line those who’ve never experienced it on console like to trot out. But the only limitation is the insufficient VRAM. The processing hardware is akin to that in a pretty high-end PC and this is evident in how smoothly it runs. I have two friends with mid-range PCs who’ve been very impressed with how it runs on Xbox Series X.

Sometimes, the black screen issue IS the fault of the dev, in that their scenery isn’t best optimised for Xbox. However in the case of Pyreegue, the airports are so insanely detailed that they’re inherently VRAM-hungry. That EGNX runs well on Xbox since the performance update is testament to the fact that well-optimised airports and aircraft can happily coexist on console.

At times I get the feeling any Xbox failure is relished by some in the PC community…

Certainly not by me. I do think, however, that a lot of XBOX users are expecting the earth out of a relatively inexpensive bit of hardware that is already a number of years old. Obviously if it runs out of VRAM quickly then you could argue that it actually can’t handle MSFS in anything other than its vanilla state. I think it’s a minor miracle in itself that Asobo have got it running anything like on a console in the first place, but the fact that they have is brilliant. Unfortunately though there was always going to be a point where the demands of a sim like this with 3rd party add-ons was going to crash headlong into the inherent limitations of the XBOX.

@RagingWombat839 In my eyes it’s not factually incorrect at all. Black screens and EMA are lot linked in any way, other than that the hardware they’re being run on isn’t beefy enough to run them simultaneously, which is my point above. The post that mentioned it implied there was a stability issue with the airport, which is of course incorrect. I appreciate you’ve moved away from consoles, but there are clearly a number of console users who are expecting far more out of their hardware than it’s capable of giving them. You probably don’t need to look much further than the marketing people to find the reason why that is the case.

Money bottom line. That’s why it’s on Xbox huge population. I have the airbus setup and quadrants mouse, keyboard all works like pc no difference. The vram memory management is only thing holding it back to fully running like pc version.

Well, yeah, but the VRAM issue is holding it back. It will always hold it back, and that’s the crux of the problem.

I’ve upgraded my GPU once, my CPU twice and added a significantly faster SSD since FS first released. The XBOX is the same today as it was on day 1 and will remain so until Microsoft release another console. Then the whole cycle will repeat again.

The Xbox is certainly cheaper but that’s not reflective of quality or its ability to run the sim. The console market is heavily subsidised and they make little to no money from console sales alone. These days, you buy into a system and its universe, which is where they ultimately make their money.

Xbox users I wouldn’t say are expecting the world — like any PC user, they’ve paid their money and therefore expect advertised products to work. Some devs don’t test on Xbox (they’re supposed to) and simply hope their stuff works. And when it doesn’t, their get out clause is the Xbox ‘limitations’.

While the Xbox VRAM issue is a stumbling block, it’s not insurmountable, and serves as a good excuse when products don’t function as expected or advertised.

If we want to fairly apportion blame, I think the buck ultimately stops with MS/Asobo — they may only promise to get the base product running on console but they know full well that third-party add-ons are the lifeblood of the sim — something they actually acknowledge by running the in-sim Marketplace! As I said, third-party devs can also be at fault but they can just turn around and point the finger at MS/Asobo. Vicious circle.

Not necessarily. They’ve said FS2024 will be less VRAM-intensive. FS2024 was designed on Xbox, with Xbox in mind. I’d be very disappointed if it doesn’t turn out to be significantly better.

There was also a very interesting, recent comment from Phil Spencer, in which he highlighted that the “current Xbox focus is on hardware”. Interpret that how you will be it’s a complete change of tune from his early-June statement.

Just an update of my personal experience with the EGNX upgrade.
I’ve just got the Milviz C310R which is a comprehensive study level aircraft or is up there with the PDMG B737’s. The best you can get for XBX that is.
I’ve taken off from cold and dark a couple of times with no problems but when I return or fly in I’m getting the dreaded black screen and blurry graphics.
Not had problems with other aircraft which is good.
I’ll do some more testing and see how it goes.
I’m also thinking of getting EGPF, EGPH and EGAA and was wondering if there are any performance issues with these upgrades.:-1::winking_face_with_tongue:

Thanks that’s all I wanted to hear in the first place :joy:

FS2024 is another issue entirely, and I’m sure this is partly the reason they moved to it. At the minute FS2020 isn’t really cutting the mustard performance-wise on PC or XBOX so hopefully the engine re-write will fix many of these problems. Software can only go so far though, and the XBOX will always be limited by RAM/VRAM. If it isn’t the EGNX/PMDG combo that exposes it going forward something else will because sadly that hardware limitation is immovable.

@Niko5587099 I think you’ll find Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aldergrove are all a bit easier on VRAM than East Midlands.

Indeed. But there are some very large, highly-detailed airports on Xbox that simply do not BS or CTD, even with the PMDG 737. IniBuilds’ KDTW, KLAX and KOKC are prime examples, and two of those have very complex termional interiors (actually more complex than EGNX).

So the Xbox VRAM issue is contentious because some devs have managed to completely negate it. That doesn’t mean it’s suddenly a non-issue, but it is something many in the Xbox community feel is compounded by some devs’ lack of motivation to fully test on console prior to release. Conversely, without the limitation, there’d be no need for devs to separately test on Xbox.

No issues whatsoever with any of them. All rock solid on Xbox (further supporting my point above).

The problem for Xbox I think is the future of airport development. Setting aside the recent advances in more efficient programming, airports are way more complex now than they were when the sim was released three years ago; and devs will continue to push the boundaries That’s the issue with a closed system with a lifespan of ten years — things change drastically in those ten years but the tech stays the same. We therefore must rely on new development/programming techniques, like those supposedly employed in the creation of FS2024.

Good, I’m just flying from south Wales to EGNX, time to waste some money whoops!!! Of to the Market I go.:+1::winking_face_with_tongue:

Just flew the V35B Bonanza into EGNX and taxied into the Rolls Royce hanger and shut down with no issues. Seems to me for now to fly the aircraft that don’t give any issues into EGNX👍

With all due respect to IniBuild’s KDTW/KLAX etc., while the interiors are indeed bigger, they are not quite as complex as the one presented with EGNX, especially when you compare texture resolution and fine details scattered around it. EGNX is as optimised as it can possibly be, it’s just big and there is not much that can be done about it except for designing it for XBX specifically which at this moment is not financially viable, the user base is shrinking and so are the profits coming from console users.

And while I am here, I’d like to ask you guys to leave an honest review of the airport on the Marketplace, it will help me a lot. Thank you

That’s not good news for any of us. I wonder if that’s an inevitable outcome from the stability issues on xbox and Asobo’s lack of success in resolving them. In general people learn quickly that add-ons cause trouble on xbox and will vote with their wallets.

Yeah probably stability has scared a lot of the console community off.

The only hope now is fs2024 they take in consideration memory management for the Xbox version then maybe may be able to use all my airports I have wasted my money on. I have giving up on 2020 add-ons money has gone for now.

I wasn’t attacking EGNX there. It was more of a dig at devs whose projects are in no way optimised for Xbox, yet are advertised as such.

The other ‘hope’ is that Phil Spencer’s recent statement means there’s some new hardware in the pipeline; or at least something that upgrades the current Series X. If Xboxers do venture over to PC, they can at least take all their add-ons with them, so its not a lost cause.

Have to concede that to you…
I bought the airport just because of the opinions in this thread (never been to this place IRL as passenger ) and I am stunned by the amazing details of the terminals. Just look close to the vending machines inside the terminal, for example.
I run it on PC (4090) and performance is great, but I can imagine that this level of detail will be a killer on XBOX.
IMHO EGNX does set the benchmark for custom made airports, and I own more than 100 including most of the “famous” ones.
Keep this amazing level for future projects!
