Update process

There are very few things about this sim which are not totally annoying.

You missed my point. Let’s say I have the Premium Deluxe edition. But let’s also assume that I don’t like flying the 787 so I have removed that from the ā€œMy Contentā€ window.

Now my archive that gets downloaded will include the 787, which I don’t require an update for.

But you are right that you could have three archives for the three main editions, and the client could then selectively install the updates for the packages you actually have installed. So in my instance I would download the Premium Deluxe archive, but it wouldn’t re-install the 787.

The way they have it configured supports near infinite variety. Just imagine how many variations of sim instances there must be, with this or that scenery or plane not installed. But its not that efficient with all the stop/start download/extract cycles that occur.

it’s not hard but you have to stay at the pc and perform each step.
Every other games I have … ā€œupdate availableā€¦ā€ OK … and I can go to sleep …

That’s is all I am suggesting, You are right, the content has to be managed by us individually but the core files download that every update requires, I would just like to see the whole, Xbox app, MS store faff eliminated.

Turn on computer, open Steam, game updates, start game, game updates, download content from game store, game updates, all over in 20 minutes. ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

Updating all will (obviously) also include the liveries, airports you disabled (3rd party airports can have problems if it’s not excluded from loading).

I was done in 15 I think. The last few updates I have not had any speed issues with downloading. Typically larger files are coming in at just under 200Mbit/s.

Good point. I didnt see that from that view. Covering all the possibilities would probably cause more problems than the update should solve.

Ecactly. All update process is realised by really stupid way. Why there is process like this?

  1. download file
  2. unpack file
  3. install file
  4. download next file
    etc …
Why update manager don“t download by maximal download speed whole package like 1 file and install update after it by maximal speed, because all files are downloaded?

Any game in this space have better update process than Asobo MSFS. ItĀ“s really annoying Asobo. Why update isnĀ“t realised on backgroud when is released? Why it is run when I want to play game? Look on World of Tanks or any other game, how they have realised updates … I donĀ“t have any problem in last many years of updates of WOT, but I have problem after each update of MSDS. WHY Asobo? Why can be update process of free to play game problem free and why each update of MSFS that I payed for much money is about much time and much problems? WHY?

So making maybe a dozen mouse clicks with one finger is hard, but changing code is easy eh?

Perhaps you like unnecessarily complicated update procedures?
I just dont see the need for 3 applications for updating a single instance of a game. I cannot think of any other application or game that is as convoluted as this one is, where updates are concerned, can you?

Please understand, this is a complaint about free content, and I like free content.

I also get annoyed by ATMs that make me type in exact change when they only dispense money in increments of 20.

How many of those games attempt to recreate the entire planet in 1:1 scale?

I never found pushing my index finger on a button a couple of times unnecessarily difficult, even if that entails gasp possibly moving my hand a couple inches between those difficult finger movements.

Since your sarcastic response suggests you dont really understand what some of us are complaining about, let me give you a run down of what my procedure was like. This is what the procedure was for me this morning:-

  1. Booted up MSFS to be told that a mandatory update was required. MSFS closes down, store boots up.
  2. Look for update in store, no update available.
  3. Re-boot pc in the hope that update shows up in store, still no update.
  4. Go into W11 start menu and try to work out which of the 4 Xbox apps I have on my system which MS insists I have will have the update.
  5. Find the right application, boot it up and update shown. Click update, it takes me back to the store.
  6. Store now shows MSFS has an update. Download the update.
  7. Now taken back to Xbox app to start MSFS.
  8. Start FS and now have to download another update and install it.
  9. Sim reboots after update completes and now to the Market place to download the Iberia update.
12.Now into content manager to update all the other content sthat this latest update has altered.

A few mouse clicks is it? This is NOT a streamlined update procedure, I dont care if you say otherwise.

ā€œMandatoryā€ updates should be automatic. downloaded in the background and installed the next time the game starts.
Optional content updates should appear as a list when the game starts up and is ā€œchecking for updatesā€ as a list with checkboxes. ā€œCheck boxes you want to update now, click continue if you do not want to update anyā€
How hard can that be?

That’s essentially how it worked for me. It was downloaded automatically in the store and the next time I started the sim it applied the update which took maybe 15 minutes. Then there were optional updates available in the content manager. Very easy for me.

Easy peezy!

still stuck on 1.23.12 can’t update.
starting FS2020 goes past looking for update, right into game.

How do you force updating to 1.24.5.0

Indeed. My experience was much like yours, but the only way I go the thing to ā€œupdateā€ was to uninstall it and reinstall it. Again. Every time this product has an update, I have to reinstall the entire thing. No problems with other games in the Xbox Gamepass (PC) space. So it isn’t an xbox issue thing or a gamepass issue, its a Microsoft Flight Simulator issue.

It’s a hugely broken process that needs to be fixed. I am happy that some have no issues. That doesn’t mean it works for all. There are definitely issues at play.
