Upgrade from I7 7700k to Ryzen 5950x on GTX 1080TI & Reverb G2 connection issue

This is just to share my recent upgrade experience.
Former build:

  • EVGA Z270 Stinger
  • Intel I7 7700k
  • EVGA GTX 1080TI FE w/ HP Reverb G2
  • 32G G.Skill 3600Mhz

Newer build:

  • MSI x570 Carbon Pro WIFI
  • AMD Ryzen 5950x
  • Same GPU, same RAM, same VR headset

Typical VR performance with old build when sitting on the tarmac in Burbank airport in a C172, 30FPS and abysmal CPU 60-70ms frametime totally bottlenecked (would significantly improve with altitude). This is with my i7 7700k OC’d to 5.1ghz (4.4ghz normal boost clock) ! The GPU would work at 60-70% due to CPU unable to perform.

With the 5950x… Same setup, CPU frametime reduced to 15-25ms… GPU back to 100%… Ah ! The poor thing being overly fed by the new CPU

That said, the AMD 5000-serie has to be an excellent choice for MSFS2020…

However, I am encountering the HP Reverb G2 connection issue with this new x570 MB. So far unable to do much as the the G2 draws more power than what the MB can provide. HP Support requested and I shall get a new headset cable shortly. Hopefully that will help. More to follow on other posts in VR section.

It’s a known issue that the G2 doesn’t work properly with the back plate USB ports on the current AMD generation. I’m actually surprised you could get a connection, on my B550 motherboard I can’t get the G2 to connect at all. My solution is to use a PCIe USB 3.0 slot in card with a dedicated power supply connector, with that I’ve got no problems connecting the G2.

It does also work as a workaround to use the front USB ports which are connected to the chipset instead of the CPU like the back ports, but then you have to make sure to be on the latest BIOS version, as older BIOS had USB issues with the USB ports fed by the chipset.

PCIe USB 3.2 Type C card, exactly what I did and now works perfectly. Interestingly, MSI support mentioned that only the USB-C port on the MB is able to provide 7 watts of power which is insufficient I would assume for the G2. The USB PCIe card I bought is able to provide 15 watts.

How can a new cable help if your MB cannot provide enough power?
I read elsewhere that these issues were resolved with the latest AGESA, give it a try.
Otherwise buy a supplementary USB card or hub with separate power supply as suggested.

All the updates were done. Including, BIOS, CHIPSET, AGESA, Windows Update, GPU. G2 Firmware, even my mouse !

The G2 cable comes with a “mini-power” pack or additional power cord. Maybe HP got the super clever flash idea to update this thing instead of requiring power from USB ports. SO, I am hoping they’ll send an upgraded cable. Will I be surprised if they don’t ? No !

Got the expansion PCIe USB-C port already and it works fine now.
