Upgrade from i9900k to Ryzen 7 7800X3D

Hey folks,

Currently I have the following PC configuration :
:

  • i9900k with ddr3 32gb ram
  • RTX2080 Super

I normally fly with 1440p widescreen 32inch.

I have noticed my current configuration is showing its age with more and more demanding addons and scenarios, hence I decided to upgrade my PC with following configurations :

  • Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
  • CL30 DDR5 6000mhz 64gb RAM.
  • RTX 4070TI Super (I am going to wait for new lineup that hopefully will be announced by Nvidia at CES which I hope will have 16gb vram. For now I will just use my current 2080).

What do guys think? Should I proceed with this new configuration?

32GB RAM is plenty for MSFS, so consider dropping back to that if you don’t run any really memory hungry apps, otherwise your upgrade looks solid to me for 1440p.

I was thinking since I am anyway getting new a DDR5 RAM, why just not get 64gb since the price not a much difference.

Crazy, that’s pretty much my setup, except I have a 2070Super. I’m thinking of going down the exact same path as you. What mobo are you looking at?

I am looking at msi tomahawk wifi amd x670e which I think represents a good price/performance ratio (around 300Euros).
Actually I was thinking to do the other way around, first the GPU and then the CPU upgrade but I realized, it would pretty much pointless to get RTX40XX on aged CPU like ours (once upon time, i9-9900 was a top CPU lol). Hence, since I am already waiting for Nvidia new lineup, I thought myself maybe I can start on CPU upgrade and then get back to the GPU upgrade hopefully on Feb.

I’m on an i7 10700k, 32GB DDR4 and a 3090, next setup will be the 7800X3D (unless something better pops up in the next few months) and the same amount of RAM but DDR5

For fast DDR5, 7000MHZ or more, it has to be 2 modules instead of 4 anyway. That is, 2x16 or 2x24.

I would agree with this - also make sure if you are going to get something like DDR5-7000 memory get a kit that is on your motherboards certified vendors list to ensure compatibility. That was the key for my DDR5-7200 memory working great with no issues.

For DDR5, it depends on the memory and the motherboard memory controller.

I have 7200 DDR5 with 4 slots of 16GB QVL but will only run at 6400 Mhz
on this MB.

Hi all,

I’m leaning towards the same upgrade. I currently have a i7 9700K OC to 4.9Ghz paired with a 3070Ti and 32Gb DDR4 @ 3600Mhz.It still does the job but i find myself tweaking more then flying.

Would the upgrade to a 7800x3d make sense? And also what Mobo do you suggest?Note i got quite a lot of USB’s that i would like to attach directly into the Mobo.

Brgds,
Steven
