Upgrade opinion

Hi I would like your opinion on an upgrade. i currently have an i7-10700K, rtx3060Ti, 32gb ram 3200, z490 tomahawk and a 1000w power supply. I have microstutters from time to time, have both lods set to 100 and all graphics settings set to high, except precaching. I don’t have bad fps, I always fluctuate from 30.35 up in large airports such as jfk etc but microstutters appear from time to time. even when flying near water (set to medium) or if i pass through certain clouds (at ultra) i have sharp drops in fps, even below 30. if i open the fps counter i would be limited by the cpu. now my question is: to make these microstutters stop, do i upgrade my cpu or my gpu? I can’t update both, I would like to enjoy the sim in 2K, no stuttering, even at a fixed and constant 30fps, I was thinking of switching to either a 5800x3D or i5-13600k. what do you recommend?

There’s stutters and there’s microstutters, be sure which is yours. Anyway the first thing I’d try is switch DX’s and retune.

I tried everythings. In su10 the sim is beatiful (30fps locked) fron su 11 i have microstutter.

Being CPU limited is known to cause stutters. To test this, you could either increase your render scale to load up the GPU to the point you become GPU limited, or reduce both LOD’s, traffic, glass cockpit refresh, traffic, and fly a simple prop to unload the CPU and become GPU limited that way as well.

I would certainly upgrade the CPU first in either case here. The 5800x3d was king until the 7000 series x3d’s came out, so expect some uplift with it. Not necessarily increased frame rates depending on your GPU demand, but smoother frame rates. Upgrading the GPU when CPU limited will only get you better looking stutters.

I concur with previous posters: it likely is the CPU struggling, especially if your settings are set to high.
An AMD 3DVcache or Raptor Lake CPU would improve the experience.
However, before pulling the trigger, please post a snapshot of data from the Dev Tool when the stutters occur.
So we can take a look at GPU ram usage, a sanity check would not hurt.

Post your graphics settings and traffic settings.

A 10700k eitherway shouldn’t bottleneck a 3060ti. I’ve paired the two in my build last year and it ran well.

I recently moved from a 10700k to 5800x3D. My sim is running much better. More consistent frames.

I’ve already tried upping the render to 150 as well, but it fluctuates between gpu limited/cpu limited with occasional stuttering occurring in heavier places

Traffic setting to 0. Pre acaching ultra, everything else on high, first on su10 I played wonderfully. now instead if I go to the complex seroporti I have rare stuttering but that bothers me like hell.

limiting the fps helps me to have less, but does not eliminate the problem

GPU Ram is far from being fully utilized with your current settings.
A proper CPU upgrade would certainly improve the situation and should eliminate the stuttering issues you have.

If you pick up a 5800X3D and corresponding motherboard, you get to keep your current memory kit, and could reduce your upgrade costs by putting your current CPU/MB on the used market. IMHO it would provide the best value and price/performance ratio.

A new Zen4 3D or high end Raptor Lake would do as well, much more expensive of course

ok, but better to go to an i5-13600k with ddr5, or possibly a 7800x3d, or stay on ddr4 with 5800x3d? is it better for you to stay on ddr4? I spent 1.5k in May last year and it annoys me to spend more

My recommendation to everyone has been and is to not spend a lot of money to upgrade your hardware/gear! You will be disappointed. The Sim is not optimized and even people with i9-13900KF, RTX 4090 have stutters (despite good FPS) in busy areas. Stick with what you have until Asobo optimizes the game (specially DX12) or wait until the next generation of hardware becomes available!

last year i made pc exclusively for msfs. I had never spent 1.5k (2k with a qhd monitor) and in fact spending more money on a not very optimized game doesn’t make me happy. with this hardware I can play quietly, even if every now and then I have some microstutters, stuff of less than a second. I believed I will listen to your advice because upgrading the pc just for a simulator I don’t know how much it’s worth, also between the i7-10700k that I own and 5800x3d it’s not that there’s much difference, except for the vcache. the fps switching to 5800x3d will remain almost the same, albeit more fluid, and spending €450 minimum between cpu and mobo, alas, I see it as a waste of money. you are not the first to tell me that it is better not to upgrade. Thank you

My 2 cents:

IMHO the 3D Vcache on 5800X3D would provide a significant, generational jump in performance.
I would not make the upgrade with the expectation of super high FPS (useless on this sim anyhow).
However it should definitely address the smoothness/stutters issues you’re describing imho.

I recently spec’d such an upgrade in Europe, was around 320 for the CPU, another 230 for a fairly advanced MB, the Asrock x570 Phantom Gaming Velocita . Total 550.

Selling you current CPU/MB could offset this, for a net out of pocket cost of around 200/250. Picking up a B550 board could reduce the cost by another 100 Euros or so.
I think at that price the improved smoothness is more than worth it.
It would make the sim more comfortable and pleasing to use.

If you decide to go that route, your 3060ti VRAM will limit the resolution (no 4K ultra, 1080p Ultra yes, 1440p Ultra not sure, maybe).

The next most cost effective step: Upgrading the GPU for more VRAM and thus higher resolutions would set you back another 150 euros (e.g. the 16gb RX6800 can be had at 500 Euros brand new, your card could be sold around 350 on the used market).

AFAIK @TotalMoon980154 has upgraded from 10700K to 5800X3D and has reported he is very satisfied . You can look up his comments history on this subject.
Maybe he could chime in and advise further.
However his GPU is different from yours (he has a RX 6800).

which motherboard should i buy? I don’t need wifi

Need wifi or not, for value I recommend the B550M Pro-VDH WIFI from MSI (don’t forget the wifi adapter can serve as a bluetooth device). Performance is no different to their more expensive B550 gaming boards, infact I even got a faster ram overclock on it … from experience MSI are tops fo reliability.

If I may offer advice, the one mentioned earlier looks good, but my preference is a model labeled as x570s.
Two reasons: X570 has more Pcie lanes, so it allows for more flexibility.
The S at the end means it’s the latest iteration, so more mature design (no chipset fan), could be a lengthier support window as well, for BIOS updates and such.
This one fits the bill (Asrock, no wifi, reasonable price, solid features):

From MSI, with wifi, higher end, but with a discount apparently:

Of course there are alternatives at Asus, Gigabyte, even EVGA -my favorite brand
