Hello everyone, looking for some advice about a possible upgrade that is itching me.
Current rig: 12900k
64gb ddr4 3600 mhz
4090
planned rig : 9800x3D
64 gbDDR5 high frequency ram ?
I play a lot in VR and I wonder if this upgrade would grant me some more frames ? im not expecting much but I would be happy with a +5/10 in vr
I highly doubt this would change anything but im here to get your point on that
Thank you
Not sure about more FPS as you are probably gpu limited if you are running a reasonable resolution, but the lows should improve somewhat to give a smoother experience. What fps are you trying to get to? 45fps@90hz is a good target IMO. In any case, make sure to lock fps at half refresh rate.
yeah the goal is a smooth 45, even happy with a smooth 37 with motion reprojection on a quest 3, I would like to play with a higher value of TLOD if possible, right now my game is doing okay , but the tlod at 120 is a real pain in some scenery making everything blurry
According to everywhere I’ve seen so far. That is more a cross-grade. Not an upgrade.
I’m loving my 14900KS.
Hopefully someone with that chip can tell you what it’s like in real life. But it still has only 8 cores. And despite what some think, that affects performance ony heavily multi-threaded apps. Which FS24 is.
Maybe AMD have some CPU feature that alleviates that issue. But as a programmer on multi-threaded systems for over 40 years I can’t see how. I don’t pretend to know about AMDs, I’m, and Intel guy. But I know in my 24 core CPU and a RTX 4080 I get over 130 FPS with all settings on Ultra and Terrain Detail at 300 over Sydney Australia using Orbx Sydney Cityscape.
I’m a very happy camper!

Over 130fps in 2D im assuming? This is a VR thread
I just upgraded from a 5800X3D, roughly equivalent to a 12900K performance-wise in MSFS, to a 9800X3D. I also have a 4090, Quest 3 with motion reprojection, and 64GB DDR5 6000 CL30 RAM.
As @BearsAreCool510 postulates, it didn’t do much for my high end FPS as my FPS are capped at 40 FPS anyway for motion reprojection. It did improve my low end FPS significantly and now I very rarely dip below 40 FPS whereas before a busy airport in a complex airliner with lots of AI traffic would see me in the late 20s in FPS. This was actually my aim with the upgrade, so mission accomplished.
I should note that this is with MSFS 2020, which I am still using for all my airliner flights. MSFS 2024 has been a bit disappointing by loading up my system more than 2020 does and delivering slightly lower FPS for roughly equivalent settings and visual quality.
Given that I am using MSFS 2024 for VFR flying, I can deal with this poor optimisation until it is fixed, but if MSFS 2024 is going to be your main sim right now I would keep your expectations low for the time being.
thanks for both of your insight, do you think I could push tlod higher with that config, is tlod using cpu or gpu ? cause right now I can have a smooth flying experience by putting lod at 120, If I want higher I must use dlss and disable photogrammetry ( lagging with high tlod in thoses area ) and its such a shame cause visually the sim begin lacking details at 120 tlod, the minimum would be at least 300 to be enjoyable for me
TLOD is mostly CPU dependent, so yes you should be able to run higher TLOD.
