Hi, I have my MSFS MS- Store installation on dedicated 1TB SSD m.2 Drive. I need more space, so if I copy the contents to a new 2TB SSD m.2 Drive & give it the same drive letter & then format the original 1TB SSD m.2 & give it a new drive letter. Will it work or is there something I am not understanding?
It’s not a Boot Drive. My Boot Drive, (system), is on Drive C:
The Sim is on Drive H:
Thanks,
Matt

Should work just fine, I would do the copy, unplug the original one, change the drive letter and fire it up. Make sure all is working before you format the original in the event you want to revert / try again.

as long as its not your system drive, all will be fine as long as the drive letter and directory path / file structure stays the same.

I’'d second skypilots advice, but to be safe, do you have two NVME slots on your motherboard?? If you do you can put the new drive into thast empty slot. do a complete clone of the drive which will ensure it becomes bootable, then you’ll have your free space and the old drive to reformat and use as you wish.
You will need to get into your BIOS in order to change the boot drive that you wish to use.
I have done this and for me it worked fine
Might be worth the time to read through this article before you start anything. Even though this is written with the thought of upgrading from a spinner, the concept is the same.
What you do not want to do is simply to “drag and drop” in Windows Explorer. This works okay for data discs, but for boot drives you should perform a bit-to-bit clone.
One more thing to consider: if your current drive is formatted to be an MBR disk it is probably worth the hassle of setting up the new 2TB SSD as a GPT drive. GPT is a newer format that takes advantage of UEFI, which has many benefits. Read all about it (and how to convert an MBR drive) in this article.
NOTE: if you are already running Win 11 you already have a GPT drive. If you’re on Win 10 you will need to convert to GPT to run Win 11… so might as well get ready for that (eventual) switch.
Cheers… and good luck!

You cannot if the drive letter is already used.
Don’t. You’ll loose your FS2020 data.
Try this:
- Clone the original 1TB SSD to the new 2TB SSD. Or copy it to it.
Procedure:
Install the New SSD. If it is a new M.2 SSD
Go to Windows Disk Management
Create it as a Simple Volume
Format it
Give it a drive Letter
Then Clone it or copy 1TB to it
2.Go to Windows App an select “Move”
Tell it the new drive letter for the new 2TB SSD
Or
- You can use Disk Management to change the 1TB drive letter
to something different.
- Change the 2TB drive letter to the previous 1TB letter.
- Clone or copy 1TB to 2TB
FS2020 will work with the new 2TB SSD.

Right…
I had to remove my MSFS M.2 drive from my system as I only had two M.2 sockets & needed to clone my C: system drive to a larger m.2 Drive. I cloned the drive succesfully. After the process & re-inserted my MSFS m.2 drive but now despite all the files bring present on my MSFS drive the program thinks it’s not installed yet all the files are on the drive. Same applies to some Microsoft Forza Horizon 4 & Sea Of Thieves. How can I get my PC to realise that these games are installed without having to Download everthing again? Due to the two latter programs in a similar state, which are not on the MSFS drive I am beginning to wonder if Microsoft copy protection is at work here. All I want to do is repair the installs NOT re-download these big programs as my Internet speed is only 40meg! (It’ll take ages!!!)
How did you Clone the C drive? Copy or Clone Program?
Is MSFS still on H:?
You say “all the files are on the drive”. The C: drive?
I used “R-Drive Image” to clone the drive. MSFS is still on H:. On Drive C: I have noticed that some Microsoft files perporting to MSFS seem to have gone, eg. the dir Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe seems to be missing from C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps. MS Copy protection?
I have these on a backup so perhaps it would be worth copying them over from the backup of Drive C:?
When I say all the files are on the drive, I mean all the MSFS files that were on the original Drive H: are on the new Drive H:
If anyone can help then that would be just brilliant!
Thanks in Advance!
Don’t know what the “R-Drive Image” is.
A clone is an exact copy of the drive that is being cloned.
Your C: is not that.
It means that FS2020 is not installed.
It was an exact clone. It wouldn’t have been bootable if i had not cloned it. I used (www.drive-image.com) Can i reinstall MSFS over the existing installation on Drive H?
Got to Settings Apps and see if MS Flight Simulator is installed on your C: drive.
Optional: Under Advanced Options, Click Repair. Caution, not Reset.
This proves to me that it is installed.
Now, go to back under the MS Flight Simulator App and click “Uninstall”.
Then, go to MS Store/Xbox and download it again.
When the install screen appears, click the location box and tell it to install on your H: drive.
It will download the initial 1.3GB to the C: drive.
If it sees your H: drive and the files it expects to be there, it will not download
the Installed Packages again. (130 GB).
If it does not see the H; files, it will download them again to H:

It says it’s not installed despite all the files still on H:
I guess I’ll re-install back to H:
Will it keep my settings ?
All you can do is reinstall.
Save your Community Folder and Addons first.
It will download the initial 1.3GB to the C: drive.
When the install screen appears, click the location box and tell it to install on your H: drive. If it sees your H: drive and the files it expects to be there, it will not download the Installed Packages again. (130 GB).
If it does not see the H: files, it will download them again to H:
All settings are on the Cloud or in your Community Folder and Addons.
OK thanks, I’ll bite the bullet!
When re-installing should I re-install Microsoft Flight Simulator or the Premium Deluxe Edition as both are listed?
