Using Discord for support

I find using discord for support of third party add ons very difficult. Seems like discord is just a stream of conciousness with topics scattered all over the place whereas a forum keeps the question and responses together. Any tips for using discord are appreciated. BTW, I don’t want my own server, I just want to be able to look up solutions to problems or post a question and hopefully get an answer.

I’m not a huge fan either, but it seems that’s the way it’s going.

Some devs seem to do a better job than others - like having separate text channels for general chat, announcements, updates, community support, official support and so on, so they are organised like a forum to a degree. Sometimes the dev will provide an overview, worth reading if they have one as it’ll help you navigate the site.

There’s also the search bar if you’re looking for something specific.

The new forum feature added to discord recently helps but not all servers are using it. It really depends on how active the dev is for me. My Timezone precludes me a lot of the time from being on the discord at the same time as the devs so anything I post generally gets swamped by the time a dev gets on. I hardly ever ask questions and like to figure stuff out for myself but when I do the chances are the answer may not be simple or obvious. Therefore when I ask a product support question I want to know that the answer I receive is the correct one and not the thoughts of the community. I see so many posts from folks giving wrong or irrelevant information. If direct interaction with the dev could be incorporated into discord I’d be happy but currently it doesn’t work for me either. Good platform though just not for dev support in its current form.

A live chat is never a good support solution, topics get littered and conversations are hardly recognizable. But it’s cheap and quick for cheap and quick devs I guess. I at least keep my hands off products whose devs only provide discord.

Discord recently added a topic system, that works more like a forum. Makes it a lot more useful for keeping support organized. It’s up to the discord owner to set it up though.
