Using LittleNavMap in the Sim

This is more a general question, but is little nav map cheating in the sim?

It’s just so much easier to navigate with it compared to what’s available in the sim.

Funny you should say that but I’ve accused myself of cheating by using Little Navmap as a nav aid. I should really just stick to what the plane has! :grinning:

Totally cheating, and I love it. Fantastic utility.

I think it at least helps make up for dealing with 3D projections in 2D. I feel I can orient myself a little better.

Are there real flight maps/instruments that do similar functions?

It’s no more “cheating” than glass cockpits with map overlays.

LNM is essentially a Present Position Indicator overlaid on a Sectional Map.

It’s not cheating at all. Many pilots will use a tablet on a kneeboard with a moving map GPS display and use electronic flight planning tools to aid situational awareness.

What is super awesome is when you add the US VFR sectionals as a map layer (free( and use the WeLove VFR add-on (also free) - you will then see all the masts chimenys etc in the SIM just as they are shown on the sectional.

Just saw your post after I did mine. I’ve been using LNM will US sections to fly the Kodiak along the spine of the Rockies taking in as may of the small strips and fields as possible, although I really need skis now.

I use Little Navmap in MSFS + FltPlan Go (free from Garmin) as a supplement, for Procedures and airport information. These days with GPS and cellular data (in the real world) you can turn a 1964 C182H into a hybrid “glass panel” aircraft by using one (or two!) iPads. You should be ADS-B Out capable of course (or Mode S… even better!) so you can fly into and around Class B (required even for Class C) airspace.

In short, I don’t think it’s cheating at all. It mirrors what’s happening IRL.

Thanks, I loaded WeLove VFR last week after getting frustrated all the towers were missing.

Is this the VFR Sectionals map you were mentioning? https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/548994-new-maps-for-lnm/

I used to be a software engineer for an airline company. I remember back then they used tablets but it was more on the busines side of things

That’s the one I recently installed.

That’s the one! It’s awesome, although for mountain flying the Topo layer provides better more granular detail of the terrain.

What the sectionals a great for are airspaces - LNM can be very confusing in its representation of airspace as you don’t have the altitude constrains shown as a label (try the UK will all the airspace on. Confusing or what!). The sectionals however make it super clear - especially the TAC charts. You also get to see the ADS-B veil around class Bravo airports. All of which is super handy when flying VFR on vatsim.

Yep LNM is awesome. Could just do with a bit of rationalisation of the UI, but for freeware of such amazing usefulness this is a minor observation, the guy who does it deserves a medal.

Some real pilots use this (Seen Ryan MBP)

So using LNM not ‘cheating’

But I feel the same sometimes

Its not cheating as long as you dont use the wall hack or the  aim bot ;p Bwhahahaha!

I turn off the plane location indicator and just use LNV to plan routes and view topography

That way I don’t feel like I cheating😛

A pilot isn’t cheating if they choose to have additional navigation devices.

What is cheating is flying in a simulator, but it’s very enjoyable cheating.

Well, you can fly the C152 with an ICAO chart on your lap and fold it and draw lines with a protractor triangle ruler, or you use a handheld or aftermarket GPS and tablets with whatever nav service you wish… or you fly an aircraft that has a full feature moving map. All these things are available and it depends on you what you want to simulate.

It does make thing things easier, but really nor much more than what you would get in an in-plane GPS.

So the cheat depends on what plane you are flying and the purpose.

If you’re suppose to be flying an old plane with no GPS on a discovery flight with other, yes, the I would consider it cheating.

But I always use it when just flying around and sight seeing. So much easier to find airport that the built-in NavMap.

There is also a real lack of situational awareness you get without all your senses immersed in a 3D environment, even that hard to pinpoint “sense of direction”. I’d wager we are blind to most info that in real flying would instinctually be there.

I’d should hook up my oculus and see if it helps.

What is the wall hack and aim bot?
