Very Disappointed in the Aerosoft Twin Otter

MK seems to spend a whole lot of time talking about high end simmers and why MSFS isn’t the platform for them. But the fact is getting the sound right and having a functioning AP are not what I would consider high end features. These are just the basics. There’s a whole lot of misdirection in MK’s post going on and precious little effort addressing the actual issues of the release.

I feel really disheartened at this. I dont regret anything I have said about MSFS, as I want it to get better, But well…whatever… Perhaps ever the optimist Areibel could turn up and tell him he is wrong!

But I do think there is a guard around MSFS and honesty in order to protect the money. It might just be that MK pulled back the vail, who knows!

I agree about the AP and sounds; MK does too but not in this post, which is more of a truthful statement about the current market forces affecting developers right now.

You’re certainly not alone there! This is where we ALL are at the moment, developers and simmers alike. The sim is still at a very formative stage with the SDK to be finalised (if it ever will be…) so we must all make the best of what we have at the moment.

In some ways all of this reminds me of when the iPhone launched.

I was working at Apple, at the time, and I recall there were criticisms leveled at it because 3rd party developers were being forced to create very restrictive html/browser-based applications for it.

Less than a year later there was an SDK and we now call everything an “App”. How things changed.

I’m looking at the future here and choosing to not be myopic. Maybe that will be foolish, but with what Microsoft is doing in the large picture in regards to “gaming”, I’m thinking they have a vision for the future and this product is in it.

Yes but what type of gamer do they want. Ferrari have a vision for the future but I doubt it will affect me as I need not apply.

Having said that if I stopped buy add-ons who knows lol.

This is completely unnecessary. The autopilot in NAV mode will track an outbound radial. The CDI will still fully deflect, yes, but nevertheless NAV mode will work with the outbound radial you select. I’ve done it in at least half a dozen flights over the last couple of days.

Why don’t you give it a go? Sounds like you know what you’re doing and could, help a lot of people with a better review?

I love this plane and I am very happy with it, it has bugs of course, they have released it a bit in beta, but give it a little time and I am sure the pros will solve it

I missed the last ~30 years of simming, when I quit working for Spectrum Holobyte/Microprose. I was too involved with many other aspects of life and dedicated to Apple hardware. My options were limited. I think the last sim I flew was an A-10 sim on Mac. My last version of MSFS was 3.0 in the ‘80s

I’ve got such a different idea of what a sim is to many of you who have been involved all this time. This sim blows me away. Of course, I’ve not seen what else is on offer, so I don’t know what I’ve been missing.

I suppose you could try to pose the question to the Q&A and see if they will answer and what sort of answer they will give.

My hope is they are building a platform that allows for 3rd parties to create content to bring this to a level many of you desire. I hope that that platform can grow with time and open more as it develops more.

Also, this is one developers perspective. It doesn’t necessarily make it gospel. Keep that in mind.

I agree with that, but sadly he is saying what I and maybe others have been feeling for quite some time. It is not the lack of High end planes, we all know it takes time, its is the fact that many of the most planes with basic systems are not up to scratch (not all) but many, and the thinking is, if GA is bad then expectation for Airliners and thus more complex is low to impossible.

I guess what really needs answering although it appears to have been, is it really demand and devs think well ok, or is it the sim!

Hmmm, this statement gives some strange vibes from reputable addon maker. While I fully agree with what he says about MSFS customer base right now, but it sounds like: ok, we’ll do the money grab right now, because most of the customers will not recognize the quality drop of our products anyway. Large sales should mean that same quality products can be delivered at lower prices. This is what PMDG was trying to do with DC-6 (and promised to do with 737). Add some helpers for less experience users. But instead Aerosoft decided to dumb out their products. Working 4 days to fix issues? They teased the product for 6 month at least. Was there no time to finish such a glaring issues like sounds and VOR tracking? It’s not that these are some hidden bugs appearing in very special conditions.

One telling item in what he said is that the schedule to release is set in concrete.

That seems like the biggest issue here and elsewhere in the industry. The schedule is more important than the quality of the product at release. Seems there needs be bit of a pendulum swing back towards a more balanced approach where development can’t just run wild/unrestrained and a schedule that isn’t so rigid it’s compromising quality.

I dunno - if there’s ongoing support, the sell price of the products are relatively low in most cases, and the sim itself is still in development with overall improvements coming with time I don’t have a problem with this business model. They have to put product out and maintain a production schedule - just like every other business so hating them for saying so seems disingenuous. Really tired of this topic in every thread. The accusations, the hostility, and the vitriol that spreads eventually even between community members trying to have this discussion. It’s just too ■■■■ much

That is precisely the period of time I got into flight sims. I was a Macintosh diehard. My first PC was in 1997 and my the first copy of MSFS was purchased in 1998.

I launched many an AGM-65 from a Warthog on an SE30 with an Xceed Color card driving a 13" Apple RGB monitor. The original release of Falcon ate many hours of my evenings back “in the day.” It wasn’t until FS98 that I ever flew a C172, probably because I was flying Cessnas IRL on a weekly basis at the time. Now that I’m older - and with the pandemic happening in 2020 - I find MSFS is pretty amazing. It’s far from perfect. But it is light years ahead of the abandonware that FSX turned into when MS fired Ace Studios.

I’m very happy that MSFS is available to us. I fly every day. It was a huge stress relief during the height of the pandemic. I use it as a departure (forgive the pun) from the daily stresses of work and world news. I feel quite thankful for such a healthy diversion.

We are light years ahead of where I started in flight simulators…and I too am thankful for MSFS coming along when it did.

Not to mention that scheduling a release for two weeks after a Christmas shutdown didn’t leave much time to check it out vigorously. Probably those two weeks taken up mostly by marketing.

I’ve been thinking over what you posted, and had another thought.

I would look at the inclusion of Working Title as an official partner and the incredible work they are doing to bring us a fully modeled Garmin G1000 NXi, as well as their future work on the other Garmin products, plus ATC, as an intent from Microsoft to make this a more realistic experience for us.

I cannot see how that would be officially sanctioned if it wasn’t a sign of things to come.

I tried ILS approach 4 times and just can’t get the GS (glide slope) to work as designed!!!
Why on approach with the GS on, when we apply power up or down it affect the GS!!!
Any amount of power get the plane to go up or down when on “GS”!! not normal at all. The localizer is fine but the Glide slope on autopilot just doesn’t work. Is it just me or other simmers has this issue with this plane?

I swear, most of the people complaining on these official forums would complain if you hung 'em with a brand new rope.

We’ve come a LONG way in the flight sim world. A long, LONG way. MSFS has been out for 523 days as of the time of this post. If you take a moment, and view where we’ve came from, even the most ardent naysayer would have to admit that we’ve come a long way. Same with third party developers. As the sim matures, they’re learning new ways to do things/

Are things perfect? No. I firmly believe that it’s unrealistic to expect so in this day of computer / software complexity.

Just…take a deep breath, and relax. You’re expending your energy being all upset at a virtual airplane. They’ll fix it, and then all the angry ones can find another thing to complain about.

Choose wisely what you expend your energy on, for you only have a finite amount to give. I chose to enjoy what we have, rather than focus on the (very small) amount that we DON’T have.
